Is a higher or lower # better with the treadwear? I see some say 280, 400, 300 which last the longest? thanks

The higher number equates to better mileage, but keep in mind there is no Federal standard for measuring mileage. Hence, one manufacturer's 300 treadwear may provide more wear than another manufacturer's 380. I think about all the treadwear index allows you to do is compare mileage among the various tires of a particular manufacturer's line.

Treadwear is not a cut and dry issue... Goodyear EMT's are not suppose to give great mileage... yet I got 43,000 miles out of them.. and still had 3/32 on the fronts and 2/32 on the rear... rather than the tread wear rating which is only a copmparison between on tire and another of a specific manufacturer... as mentioned above...IT is more important hopw you maintain the tires: alignment and tire pressure.and driving style , all enter into the equation.

Generally you'll get more milage out of the higher number but better traction out of the lower number.
