I wanted to let you guys know that there is a lot of threads about this in the C5 general section right now. Here is some info that it doesn't sound like you guys are aware of.
The CLB does work. I don't know who at LAPD would tell you different, but he obviously doen not know what he is talking about.
If your car is locked up, installing the CLB will not help to get it unlocked, at least consistently. Some people have gotten it to unlock others have not. Maybe this is what the LAPD guy meant. I would go ahead and get one and try it. If it didn't work then I would install it after GM gets it unlocked.
The $49 is the same. Don't spend more. It does not stay plugged into the lighter. This is used only for one step in the installation procedure and then not used again.
The recall is misleading. For Manual trans, they don't really fix anything. They reprogram the BCM (not the PCM) so that if it does lock, then it will cut the fuel so that you can not move the car. This is to prevent you from causing a wreck if it locks up while in motion (I don't see how this helps anything). They inspect your column and if there is a problem they will fix it, but if your car has not locked, then it's doubtful they they will find a problem and replace anything. The nature of this whole column lock issue is that there is not a problem until it happens.
So the bottom line is that if you take it in for the recall, you are only getting the reprogram of the BCM and an inspection. This does nothing to prevent it from happening. The CLB kit does prevent it from happening. GET THE CLB - DON'T GET THE RECALL and don't worry anymore.
There is a sticky thread in the c5 general section that covers all of this.
If you have an automatic then you do get some physical corections, but not on the MN6 (all Z06's).
As luck would have it, I got my recall last night and had already scheduled an appointment for some other work this morning. When I dropped it off and the service guy printed out the invoice for me to sign, it listed the recall. I told him that I did not want the recall. I just got a call that everything was ready and that they did not do the recall as per my request. No problems.
Hope this info helps in your decision making process.

I got my recall today in the mail, and am not even going to take it to the dealer since it would only be a reprogram of the BCM.
