Default column by-pass

I see where Corvettes of Houston has a unit that sells for $49, also Mid America has one for $99, looks slightly different but does the same job. Point being is it worth the extra money? Now does this unit stay plugged into the lighter all the time or what? How does it work? I have a 02 EBz06 and have had this happen a few months ago 12,000 miles or so, couldn't move the car,had to have it trailored. It was under warrantee and they didn't say anything about a recall,I'm wondering if they put the updated part in.

I get this e-mail response from LAPD when asking if they sold a Column Lock By-Pass.

(quote) Hi,

How are you? We no longer sell them because they don't work.

I just order one from Covettes of Houston yesterday, they said they would try and get it to me in So Cal before the week end, I am waiting. From they way it looks the unit does stay connected once installed. Go to a site called 97 Vette and under the do it your self info section they have a detailed installation with instructions as well as some great pictures for what I think may be a the Thunder Racing unit CLB (not sure about that, they didn't mention manufactures) I called Thunder Racing but they said they didn't have any left in stock and it might be a few weeks before they got any in. I called all over and not everybody has these things and I just figured that there couldn't be that much difference between one kind or the other and went with Corvettes of Houston.
I am headed for Laguna Seca and Pebble Beach on Wednesday and wanted to get it installed before then.

Hope's this helps you out

Hey,

Column by pass is a VEHICLE RECALL NOTICE.
NO CHARGE.

recall notice number in Canada, 04006

for 1997-2004 models, stick and auto.

I just got the letter.

.. requires reprogram of the PCM and a lock plate clearance kit.

My car is going in next week. ( my car is a z06 stick).

Bill.

Not true. In the U.S anyway, the bypass is only for an automatic! The MN6 gets a "plate inspection", and PCM reprograming. I just got the recall notice yesterday too.

Default Please read more before making a decision...

Hey guys,
I wanted to let you guys know that there is a lot of threads about this in the C5 general section right now. Here is some info that it doesn't sound like you guys are aware of.

The CLB does work. I don't know who at LAPD would tell you different, but he obviously doen not know what he is talking about.

If your car is locked up, installing the CLB will not help to get it unlocked, at least consistently. Some people have gotten it to unlock others have not. Maybe this is what the LAPD guy meant. I would go ahead and get one and try it. If it didn't work then I would install it after GM gets it unlocked.

The $49 is the same. Don't spend more. It does not stay plugged into the lighter. This is used only for one step in the installation procedure and then not used again.

The recall is misleading. For Manual trans, they don't really fix anything. They reprogram the BCM (not the PCM) so that if it does lock, then it will cut the fuel so that you can not move the car. This is to prevent you from causing a wreck if it locks up while in motion (I don't see how this helps anything). They inspect your column and if there is a problem they will fix it, but if your car has not locked, then it's doubtful they they will find a problem and replace anything. The nature of this whole column lock issue is that there is not a problem until it happens.

So the bottom line is that if you take it in for the recall, you are only getting the reprogram of the BCM and an inspection. This does nothing to prevent it from happening. The CLB kit does prevent it from happening. GET THE CLB - DON'T GET THE RECALL and don't worry anymore.

There is a sticky thread in the c5 general section that covers all of this.

If you have an automatic then you do get some physical corections, but not on the MN6 (all Z06's).

As luck would have it, I got my recall last night and had already scheduled an appointment for some other work this morning. When I dropped it off and the service guy printed out the invoice for me to sign, it listed the recall. I told him that I did not want the recall. I just got a call that everything was ready and that they did not do the recall as per my request. No problems.

Hope this info helps in your decision making process.

The dealer will not istall an aftermarker CLB kit for you. They will only do what the recall states (depending on what trans you have will determine what they do). Auto's will get the lock disabled completely whereas the manuals will get the BCM reprogram.

I got my CLB kit from Thunder Racing, installed it last week on my 2004 Z06, and it seems to work fine. I like the Thunder Racing module because it has only about 1 inch of wires from the connector to the module and you do not have to worry about mounting the module so it will not rattle around.

I got my recall today in the mail, and am not even going to take it to the dealer since it would only be a reprogram of the BCM.
