It is a light sensor for the few items on the dash and for the light on the radio and Climate control unit. Place your finger over the button and you will see the MPH or KPH get diimmer or brighter.

Rearview Mirror Lamp Replacement

Removal Procedure

1] Remove the lamp lens from the mirror housing. Pry carefully with a small, flat-bladed screwdriver (at the rear edge (1) of the lens, furthest from the windshield).

2] Remove the bulb from the socket.

Installation Procedure

1] Install the bulb into the socket.

2] Install the lamp lens to the mirror housing. Insert the forward edge of the lens (1) (the edge nearest to the windshield) into place and push up the rear edge to snap in place.

I think I know how but my guts are not sure it looks like you get a small blade screwdriver and pry on the twin tabs near the windshield and pull back on the mirror.... really would like to see what the pictoral says

thanks

Actually, it comes off just like most of the windshield-mount types do. There's a setscrew you loosen and then slide it up and away.

Rearview Mirror Replacement Base
Removal Procedure

1] Disconnect the inside rearview mirror electrical connector.

2] Loosen the mirror mount tension screw.

3] Slide the mirror up off the mirror bracket.

Installation Procedure

1] Slide the rearview mirror down onto the bracket.

2] Connect the electrical connector.

3] Tighten the mirror tension screw. Tighten
Tighten the rearview mirror mount tension screw to 1.5 N·m (13 lb in).

If your mirror is the self dimming, it will not have the set screw to remove. It is locked in by those two tabs you mentioned.

I just removed mine a while back and the instructions in the manual are not very good. I have heard of quite a few windshields de-laminating around the mirror when the factory manual is followed.

The best way is to get a small, round-jawed vice grip that will span both of those locking tabs on the mirror mount. The locking tabs are part of the mirror and will come off with the mirror as one unit. Simply adjust the vice grip so that it will lock onto the 2 locking tabs and the bottom of the mirror. You want to lock the tabs down so that the mirror will slide off of the windshield mount.

The mirror should slide off with no effort.
