I'm looking for a reliable GPS system to install in my C5 so I can take some road trips without the fear of getting lost. I'm currently comparing two systems: the Garmin StreetPilot 2620 and the VCommand Voice Navigational System. Does anyone use either of these, and what do you think? I'm looking for something for which I don't have to download additional city maps, will re-route and get me back on track if I make a wrong turn, and can set multiple waypoints instead of just setting a route from Point A to Point B.
I use the Garmin Streetpilot 2610...it's the exact same as the 2620 without the hard disk and $200 or $300 cheaper. I recommend either highly. Just remember the 2620 will have moving parts (the hard disk) to fail . The 2610 uses a memory card and is easy to put your maps on. I have 8 adjoining states on a 128 meg memory card. Memory card access is faster than the hard disk. Garmin is supreme in the GPS industry ..they also make most of the gps equipment for modern aircraft.

What do you recommend??
Thanks!
For about $10 you can buy an Atlas of the the US. It will install nicely behind your seats.

I too have a Street Pilot III and just love it for when we go on back road cruises. It also works fantastic for locating and mapping to restaurants, hotels, etc....
I rented a Hertz car with the Magellan(Neverlost) Roadmate 700 and loved it. The maps are preloaded, provides voice notification of distance, turns, etc., and quickly reorients itself if you make an incorrect turn. It is pretty amazing. If you want to try one, it is a daily option on a Hertz rental. A question-Will it(or any GPS brand) work in an 04 ZO6 with the metallic windshield and/or will it interfere with the ZO6 electronics? I called the GM Tech 1-800 # and Emailed GM but have not received an answer from either. When I ordered an EZ Pass transponder for the ZO6, I could not use the windshield mounted style because of the metallic windshield. They(New Jersey) have a list of cars that have this metallic windshield, and provide you with a transponder that mounts on the front license plate lower screws. Thank you.

Yep, I've got one of those, but I prefer to keep my hands on the wheel and my eyes on the road, instead of trying to flip pages and read tiny print while I'm driving.
I am on the road over 150 nights a year. The Garmin has been accurate and reliable. I do travel with an external antenna for the occasional rental that causes problems. I have not used it with a Z06, so I can't answer the windshield question. The ability to search for local points of interests, food, lodging, pharmacy, museums etc., make it a must have if you travel a lot. I am very good at reading a map, and maps have their place, but getting voice commands (turn by turn) is worth it's weight in gold. I've used Magellan and Garmin, both are great units. I purchased the Garmin because it was $800 cheaper at the time.
I have the brand new Pioneer Avic-N1. I use it all the time the girl guides me to my destination flawlessly everytime. The Avic-N1 has more features than ANY navi system yet. I can watch DVD movies, navigate, listen to XM, or even bring up actual vehicle performance gauges right on the screen. It is also voice command and touchscreen. This unit is unlike others where you have to buy the headunit and then everything else such as navigation seperately. Excellent unit. Here is a pic of it in my 97 Z28 which will soon be going in the C5.
Thought I'd revive this thread one last time for those who only check the forum from their work computers on weekdays. I plan on making my GPS purchase sometime today. Right now I'm leaning toward the Garmin 2620. Anyone else have recommendations?
I'm looking too and stopped at Best Buy today. I liked the Magellan front buttons, menus, and map size better than the Garmin. The Garmin has a remote, but that may be just another thing I don't have room to store in either car. If I buy, I'll opt for the Garmin 2610 or Magellan 500 / 500 plus because cooking a disk drive in the heat on top of the dashboard can't help its life expectancy. It seems the online prices for both units are fairly close in the $750 - $850 price range. Best Buy had the 2610 for $999 and didn't carry the 500 anymore.
