Default HELP--New Buyer Maintenance Question???

Picked up a gorgeous 2004 Vert (Mag red w/oak) on Wed. Dealership was clueless on questions or suggestions. Thank goodness for this forum making me very savy on items of interest.

Have only one question....Dealership said 1st maintenance (oil chg) needs to be at 2k and 7k thereafter. Owners manual says 3k. What is the correct answer??? I do realize that the onboard system will warn me when oil life has expired.

PS--ditched the idea of buying a C6 and have no regrets with the C5.

With a new engine I always change at 500, that said if you buy used GOD only knows..........and probably wasnt at 500 so aparently it really doesn't matter that much. if you change at 500 or 3000 unless you plan on many miles till the next car. I'll probaply go 200,000 till the next one so I'm cautious.

When I bought my '04 (new with 6 miles) I had the first oil change done at 1000 miles. Now I wait for the DIC to read about 40-45% oil life left or 5000 miles. Just remember to get the oil changed at least once every 12 months.

I changed my oil and filter first time at about 600 miles. Then I did DEs so often I changed it after each of those. Now I change it every other weekend.

I recommend AMSOIL Synthetic 5w30 which meets GM specifications and is rated by AMSOIL for 25k miles or 12 months, whichever comes first (with oil filter change at six months or as recommended by DIC). With this high quality oil in the car you can feel comfortable going until the DIC says to change it.
Comparative Oil Test

The AMSOIL oil filters are also excellent. SDF 32 is correct part number for the C5/Z06.
AMSOIL Oil Filter Comparison

You can find the exact AMSOIL products for any of your vehicles here:
AMSOIL Online Product Application Guide

You can order AMSOIL via the link at the left or by calling 1-800-956-5695. In either case, please use customer number 1206638. Sales benefit this site and my race team. Thanks for your support.

Congrats on the new ride!

On my 97 I did my first oil change at 2200 miles before I took it to a track event. After that I changed it once a year even though I was doing 3 track events/year. I am following the same course with my 03 now. No use dumping good oil away and wasting money that can be spent on more needed maintenance items like brake pads and rotors.

1st chnge at 1,000, 2nd change at 3,000; and will change every 3,000 there after. Will average 6,000 miles a year on my short commute daily driver.

This is what I have done with my '00. I go about 4500-5000 miles between oil changes.

Pardon what could be a silly question, but I do not own a Vette (yet). I'm going to start doing maintenance on my girlfriend's '00 so she can stop taking it to the dealer, and I'm wondering how do I reset the oil life sensor after I change the oil. I've done searches here and haven't seen anyone mention it.

Thanks!

Put the DIC on oil life and hit and hold reset. That should do it.

I figured it was probably something ridiculously simple, or else someone would have asked it before.

Thanks!
