Default Windshield nightmare?

Has anyone gotten the windshield on their Z06 replaced? I took a rock hit over a month ago. Even though I thought we were told that the Z06 glass was thinner than the other Vettes, the part number for the window is the same for the Z06 and the convertible. They ordered the windshield and it was delivered cracked. They ordered another one and it was delivered cracked. They ordered the third one and now they were on backorder.

They finally came today to install the windshield and took a look at the top molding and said that a replacement should have come with the window but it did not. They called the office and supposedly found a part number for the molding and had to order it for $217!

If anyone has had this done successfully, it sure would be helpful if they could find the correct part numbers for me. Does the fact that the new windshield works with HUD make any difference?

Vent, vent, vent...

That sounds wrong. I will have to look the part # up on my C5 parts CD when I get home tonight. The Z06 windshield also has to have the special finish required for the HUD.

It depends on which windshield supplier the installer used. The Z06 windshield is thinner but various suppliers may ignore that and only provide one windshield for both convertible and Z06. In most cases the Customer will never know.

The windshield is not thinner as far as I know. The rear window is what is thinner.

The front windshield is only different for HUD vs No HUD, and some coupe windshields have an antennae in them.

As long as you get a HUD windshield you are fine regardless of the antennae. Even a non-HUD will work, but some experience HUD clarity change.

On my ncm delivery in June the guide told us the plant has 4 windshields. 2 for the vert/z06 (hud/nohud) and 2 for the coupe (has the antenna in it.)

I think the thinner glass thing is an urban legend

No personal experience but I remember a member post quite some time ago reporting that he replaced his windshield with a "non-HUD" one and the HUD worked just fine. Again, no personal experience, but that was at least one report on this issue. Good luck.

You may be correct but they do say it on the video, plain and clear.

It's not an urban legend.........if you view the VCR tape that came with the 2003 Z06, you will hear the speaker state that the windshield glass is thinner, for weight reduction. The VCR tape also mentions the exhaust and tires that are "special" for the Z06, also for weight reduction.

From http://www.rogerscorvette.com/history.htm

The 2002 Z06 windshield was thinner than that used in the coupe models, shaving 2.65 pounds per car. The lighter windshield was shared with convertibles equipped with the Heads Up Display (HUD) option, which was standard on 2002 Z06 models.

So it is lighter but it is also the same as

Look at the black label in the lower right hand corner of the windshield (on the passenger side).
I think the thickness of the windshield shows up there.

You CAN replace HUD windshield with a non-HUD one. I've seen it done on friend's coupe. I honestly couldn't see ANY difference between two.
Surelly beats paying $200 vs. $1200.

Since insurance will probably pick up the cost of the windshield the cost isn't a factor unless it is below your Glass Coverage deductible.

Yep, got mine fixed under wararanty beacuse the bloody thing leaked right from the factory. They boke the first one taking it out (it was not installed correctly and leaked). Oh and there is a special one for the HUD, make sure they get that one or your HUD display will be fuzzy, mine is fine now with no leaks.
