I just recieved GM's safety recall notice for the dreaded column lock bypass. I am relatively new to these forums and as a matter of fact, I first found it after searching on the internet about the CLB problem because my 2000 Coupe locked up on me in my garage in the middle of June.
I notice that the recall has a date of July 2004 on the top of it but was wondering if that means that I will not be able to be reinbursed for the repair I had done at my local Chevrolet dealer here in Plano, TX. Happened less than 2 weeks after I moved down here from northern NJ.
Anyway, I am not really familiar with how recalls work but what are the odds that I will be reinbursed for the $399.96 I spent on parts and labor on June 14 given that this recall is dated July ? Really sucks if I missed a valid CLB 'fix' as stated in the recall by just a few weeks.

In your recall notice, it should have had a page that talked about getting reimbursement for repairs already paid for on the CL problem. You will have to send in the receipt for repairs and then wait for them to cut you a check.
Oh and btw, I meant steering colum lockup problem not CLB problem. Been a long day. The CLB is something i still need to do so this doesn't happen to me again.
I don't have my notice in front of me but, Ithink there was a section about getting reimbursed for past repair.
Included with my recall notice was a separate Customer Reimbursement Claim Form for those that had paid to have the recall condition corrected prior to receiving the recall notice. The form contains submission instructions and lists supporting documentation (repair receipts, etc.) that must accompany the submission. Hope this helps.
Ok, I'll blame it on being at work all day - when did GM announce a recall on the steering lock issue? What years are covered? I haven't heard a thing about it!
Thanks!

Read your recall notice again, especially the section titled What Will Be Done:. As stated in this section, if your car is an automatic, the dealer will remove the column lock and the steering column will no longer lock when the key is removed. So, if yours is an automatic and your dealer properly completed the work as specified in this recall notice, you will not need the CLB. Cars with the 6-speed transmission are a different story as the lock plate is to be inspected and replaced if necessary and the PCM reprogrammed. As the columns will still lock on cars with the 6-speed transmission, they still could be subject to column lock failure.
I think there are a few threads about the product recall for the steering column lock on these boards. I initialy found them from a Google search but I think you can do a search on these boards too.
My recall notice seems to be specific to the year of my Corvette (2000) but I am sure all the notices that were sent out have the year of the Corvette the owner purchased that this recall effects. Even still, mine just says "General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2000 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles." Doesn't get a whole lot more specific than that however so it remains to be seen if mine is truly covered or not. Mine is a 2000 MN6, not sure of the serial number without going out to look.
I just moved to TX from NJ 2 months ago (and have changed addresses a few other times while in NJ since I purchased the car) but they managed to find me so maybe yours will arrive soon if you have a model year that falls under the recall. So keep an eye out or perhaps even call GM directly ?? Not sure about the latter.

You really should visit the Forum more often. This topic has dominated the discussion in C5 General over the last several months. Here's the link to one thread which the Forum moderators or adminstrators combined (merged) from many that were going around at the same time in C5 General: The latest column lock recall...(merged threads)
If your questions aren't answered in this thread, you should be able to find any number of others using the Forum search feature. Good luck.

Thanks for the assist! I know we've talked about the recall maybe one day perhaps happening, but to hear that people have gotten notices is exciting! Thats what I like about this forum - all the help - good stuff!
Thanks
if you have an A4 (automatic) the fix is going to be OK BUT if you have a MN6 (6 speed) .. . do yourself a favor and buy the bypass for $50 and eliminate having the problem again. If you have a 6 speed all they are doing is to make sure the gas shuts off if you lock again . . . . if you have an automatic then they are removing the plate for good
I just wanted to comment so you fully understand what they are going to be doing
