I saw 99 Octane at the pump the other day. At 5 bucks a gallon i wouldnt fill up with it but, why and what is that high octane used for?
thanks
THE HIGHER THE OCTANE VALUE MEANS THE LOWER THE COMBUSTABLE TEMPERATURE. JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT ,AV GAS IS 100 OCTANE LOW LED AND IS DYED BLUE AND RUNS ABOUT 3 BUCKS A GALLON AT YOUR LOCAL AIRPORT. IT WORKS WELL IN MY RACE BOAT.
I used to buy 116 Octane and maybe slightly higher from the local municipal airport. 50 gallon drum for about $150. Of course this was when 87 octane was $1/gallon at the pump. Even so, check with local airports and see if they will sell you some. I bought mine through a pilot friend that would buy it for his plane.
What they sell at Commerce is unleaded. I know there are some guys that use leaded aviation fuel not realizing it has lead in it.
You don't want to run Av gas if you have CATs.
I would be suprised if you found 100 + leaded gas at the local pump. It's illegal to sell it, isn't it? Some of the higher octane gas that is sold at the tracks is leaded, so you need to know what your buying.
Yes, it is illegal to sell leaded gas at a station. What I buy at the Shell station is unleaded 100 octane and what is at the track (what I've seen) is unleaded also.
