You're correct. the only thing they share is their bore spacing.

I believe it is the option code for the engine and nothing else, like L88, L82, Lt1, LT4,etc.

The L has been used to designate the Generals engine RPOs for at least 40+ years. You may have heard of L71, L79, L88, LS5. I have never heard what the L, T, or S letters may stand for though.

Maybe I should have asked Dave Hill that question when I was at the GM Corvette Tech Center show instead of asking him about quality. He probably would have given me an answer instead of blowing me off about quality. Nice to meet another person full of themselves. Can't have too many of them. Then watching him put a foot on someones tire (without asking)to sign an autograph was even more irritating!
