Dealer said clicking noise in rear is causes by axel spline. Thay have to repack. Thay said I have to pay about $160 to repack because they are not replacing a part. Therefore it is not covered under my GMPP extended warranty. Does this sound right?
Several members have reported the same symptom - the caused turned out to be a corroded spline and the repacking cured the problem. I don't know about how GMPP classifies this but it sounds like they consider it more of a maintenance issue rather than a defect in a part or workmanship.
The grease itself that they'll use is not sold separately. It comes with the boot rebuilding kit that you would normally buy. And the boot should be replaced anyway since the grease needs to be refreshed. First thing to do, if you are able, is to inspect the boot for signs of cracks or holes. If you see any signs of failure, you may be able to get them to replace it under warranty as a failed part. It's a long shot because the boots are probably considered wear items as well. But hey, wth, doesn't hurt to ask.
As usual, I'm going to suggest the diy route if you're handy with tools. It's not a major job and several guys here have done it at home on jackstands themselves. Otherwise, best of luck getting them to cover it.
Thank you for replying. The dealer already has car and I told them to fix it. It seems with 32000 miles driven 99% of time in clear blue sky weather, that this would not happen. But dealer needs to make a buck.
It is just so hard to trust dealers as they seem to wiggle there way out of warranty issues when ever thay can.
