This morning I drove my friends Porsche 911 C2S out to Amityville, NY to drop it off for service. The ride is really one with the road, a bit harsh, a tad noisy but oh so fun. I then got into my vette, which was by The Vette Doctors, down the block from the Porsche repair facility, and I couldn't believe how cushy the ride felt when compared to the Porsche. Though I do like the Porsche's steering much better, the brake pedal requires much more effort in order to stop than the vette's and I felt much more "beat up" when getting out of the Porsche than the vette. I do love driving at the higher RPM's however, which is a Porsche staple. I guess that they are truly 2 different animals but both are great fun.
The Porsche does handle the road well. Funny, but one of the complaints I have heard about the C5 is that the ride is too smooth...doesn't feel like a sportscar. I must admit, after upgrading the suspension, our C5 does handle better, although a bit harsher ride. But we addressed that with adjustable shocks.

I can't speak to driving a 911 since it's been a loooong time, but I've recently driven a couple Boxters and absolutely hated them. My girlfriend's '01 Audi TT Quatro roadster feels much better all around than the Boxters...
They are both great cars - just different approaches to the product by different manufacturers. Porsches - Vettes - I've owned 'em both - only have the 2002 'Vette now. If the garage and bank account were both big enough, I'd have a whole lot of different cars....maybe different kinds of socks too!
My girlfriend has one, it's a great car and she even loves it when I 'ring it's neck' and use those revs... I love cars that rev higher, but boy do I miss the torque of my vette!
911s are great cars, and a true classic. In my road course experience (driving with the Porsche club at several DEs), these are my observations:
1) the C5 is faster on the straights and wide sweeping turns, but not by much (I have a coupe, the Z06 widens the gap a bit more)
2) the 911 is faster through tight slow turns. They can just "flick around" serial 90s better than the C5
3) The 911s brakes are better
I've been in the passenger seat of a 911 turbo, driven by an instructor-level driver, it was fast as hell, and really pulled hard Gs in the turns and with braking.
Pretty cool BUT What didn't you think was possible???
Didn't think it possible that with all of my mods, especially suspension mods, that my C5 would be cushy when driven back to back with a stock 911 C2S. I thought that my C5's brakes were gone, with such an effortless push, when compared to the manual feeling 911 brakes. Also the ride in general felt less punishing in the C5. Steering & braking in the C5 are "Cadillac" smooth in comparison. The 911 was great fun to drive and ate up road quickly but after a 40 mile drive in it, it was nice to take a break & hop into the C5.
Also the Porsche was dropped off at "German Auto Repair Technicians, Inc." at 1 Elm Place in Amityville, not at a Porsche dealer. They are down the block from The Vette Doctors.
