I am painting my hoodliner this weekend as a DIY project. However, I have a problem. There are places on the hoodliner where there are lighter spots all over the hoodliner. I'm not sure what to do. We started last night around 6 pm and painted two coats. Then let it sit for about two hours and noticed the spots. We just assumed that they were places which didn't receive enough paint so we painted in these areas only and then just let it sit all night. At 8 am this morning they were still there. So, we decided to give it another coat. The spots are still there. Just a few other pieces of info that might help. 1. We did not clean it very well before starting. I have a 2004 and it wasn't very dirty at all. 2. We sprayed the 2nd coat a few mintues after the first. But, they were both light coats. Other than that, I'm not sure what might have happened. I guess it is possible that it needs more cure time, but it was dry to touch this morning. Any advice would be appreciated. I really don't know what to do. I have a pic if someone can host it for me. I can't get it into the post.

I have a bit of the same problem, but it's where I have watermarks on the liner. I think i'm gonna have to pull it back off and seal both sides with something. You may need to do the same thing. Just need to know what to use to seal it.
Anybody out there able to sugest someting for us to use??
Mine has very simillar water marks on it but, mine are mostly on the edges. No idea on how to fix this other than paint the whole thing with flat black paint. The liner absorbs a lot of paint so you will need to repaint the white areas many times before you get good coverage. I'm thinking about just buying a new one and starting from scratch since I also have some edges that are beginning to separate due to its age (~2 yrs old).

I'd say you are going to have to use a lot more black to cover up the spots then do your color painting on the emblem. Good luck - hopefully it will turn out great for you.
There is a sealer at Lowe's (and I imagine at Home Depot as well) that is in a spray. I believe its shellac-based but its designed specifically for covering water spots in ceilings for instance. I don't know why it wouldn't work here. I've used it years ago on a house with a condensating AC unit where the lines have dripped on the ceiling of a two story house. Worked great on sealing the water spots before using a color coat. Its white when applied and may require several coats of black to cover but at least it should seal the water spots (assuming that's what your problem is) and allow for a more uniform coverage over the entire liner. If you use it, you may want to try a small area on the back side of the liner to make sure there isn't some sort of bad reaction between it and the liner material.
When I started painting mine I started with two coats of flat black on the entire liner. It made the project look great. And the emblem paint took about 4 or 5 coats before the areas looked any good at all. The liner really sucks up the paint. I also found that the silver paint sealed things up better than any of the other colors. So I gave the emblem area a coat of silver over the paint I had already put on and then went back the other colors and they came out much better. Hope this helps.
