I used to be of the opinion that the Z16 was not really comparable to the Grand Sport because the G.S. had more horsepower than its' siblings, produced in fewer numbers and the stripes were painted.
Sorry Zoomin,
Every 1996 Corvette sold with the 6 speed tranny had the LT-4 engine!!
The GS had those beautiful ZR-1 style and sized wheels and tires, bigger brakes and that unmistakable paint job!!
FWIW & IMHO:
2,025, I believe, is the quantity for the Z16.
I would do the Z16 in a heartbeat.
If I wouldn't take such a bath selling my '02 Z06, I would be out shopping for a '04 Z16.
The age old question...is my Vette going to go up in value. Check to see how many were built. I can't remember the numbers of Z16's. I wouldn't bank that the Z16 is going to go way up in value...maybe in 30+ years, but in the immediate future, I doubt it.
As mentioned in another reply, there were a total of 2025 Z16's built. The decision to buy should really not be made based on resale value as many have said cars as investments is a bad idea most of the time. The value certainly will be better than any "normal" american made vehicle for sure, but decide for the ride ... any Z you choose will probably not steer you wrong and you won't likely be disappointed in terms of overall enjoyment.

Ken
I'm perfectly aware of that Ken. I bought one. My point is that Chevy at least gave the C4 a bon voyage power boost. Not so for the C5.
