I have just purchased a 97 and it is in need of tires. Does any one have any suggestions? The run-flats are horrible on price. I understand that Michellin and Firestone make the same type of tire and I'm wondering if they would be a better tire than the Goodyears that are now on it? The Goodyears tires are very noisy and the mileage rating must be the lowest in the industry with only 18,000 miles.
Just watch the forums on a daily basis and you will come across a good set at a good price! Many seem to think that the GY runflats are the worst of that kind. All I know is that the GY runflats on my '99 lasted 21,000 miles -- and then I switched to Z06 wheels and GY Supercars.
The Stones are good...only complaint people have is the image from behind as they are narrower than the GYRF's...I have Pilot Sports the Non runflat version and love 'em...Kuhmo has RF tires now as well...Michelin has the Zero Pressures which are not a true run flat but do allow you some extended mobility..the Michelin A/S zero pressures look kinda like snow tires according to some people....best value for the $$ if you wanna stay with RFT is the Firestones...truthfully the e wear was about the same on the rear howvere the fronts will last 2X as long
I switched from run-flat GY's at 24000 mls.
I strongly recommend Good Year F1 GS D3's - not run-flat but very grippy and quiet, with superb wet weather performance and they look kinda 'groovy' too.
Look around on TireRack.com and compare prices. I'm at just over 39,000 on my original EMT's and could probably get another 8 to 10,000 miles. Just depends on how you drive. I'm 120 miles from the next city, so runflats work for me.
Say what you will about runflats, but they do work. I had a flat the other day on my '04 COupe. Only indication was a message on the DIC saying "zero tire pressure- do not exceed 55mph". Was driving 75 at the time. Car handled fine. Tire only appears half-deflated when flat. Called toll free Goodyear number and they connected me with Discount Tire. They repaired flat with no problems and I was on my way.. Nice technology. and yes they do create a little more road noise than a non-runflat. It's a trade-off. How lucky do you feel.??
