I am new to the forum, hopeing someone can help. I am looking at a 04 C5 that has had some history of belt squealing on acceleration. I was told GM could not fix the problem. They put 2 new belts plus altenator and water pump. I drove the car yesterday and did not hear a thing. Any suggestions on what else could be checked?

Welcome to the Forum
First of all, go to another dealer. ANY dealer that states they cannot
fix a problem shouldn't be in the service business.
Have another dealer change out the belt tensioner (passenger side in
fron of engine). That is the main culprit in squeeling belts.
And also change the belt a third time as well. There are two belts to
change by the way.
Also look to see if the harmonic balancer (big pulley on lower center
of engine) is not wobbley. It should turn true.
There are two belt systems...the drive belt system and the AC belt system...The drive belt sytem has a history of noise.. on theis system you have a belt.. a tensioner with a sealed bearing, an idler with a sealed bearing, water pump bearing, powersteering pump bearing and alternator bearing... this dive system is the one that usually cause the noise... if you change out the tensioner (two bolts), also change out the idler ( one bolt ).
the AC belt system also has a tensioner and idler... but these are rarely an issue.
Thanks for the responses. I am interested in purchasing this car. It is available for a decent price with 14,500 miles on it. I still have plenty of factory warranty left. It sounds as if the problem can be fixed if it does show up again. I will try to talk this dealer in to checking it all out again. By the way the dealer that has it now is not the one that said they had done all they could do. The original owner got digusted with the squeaking and lack of another dealer's ability to fix it so she got rid of the car. I talked to her today and she tells me other than the constant squeaking the car was fine.
