Last week the dealer did my CE's first oil change. Today I was looking under the hood and saw the filler cap sitting on top of the coolant overflow tank. When I picked it up there was a dime sized mark where it looked like a small washer had melted partway through the plastic tank cover.
My question: What do you think caused the burn? There are no apparent damages to the cap and no area on it that would make that type of mark. Did the mechanic put the hot drain plug on the tank cover and then try to hide it with the filler cap?
By the way, when I called the dealer, the service manager was very apologetic and helpful. He has already ordered a new tank. I don't see any problems getting it fixed.
Are you sure it's a burn? Sounds to me like the hood pressed down on the cap when it was closed. Also, explains why the cap didn't fall down under the car.

There really isn't anything on the cap that matches up to the mark, which by the way is kind of doughnut shaped: round with a small raised area in the middle.

the cap would not make a dime sized burn neither the top nor the bottom is that small... but.... an oil change jock at the dealer could have left his cigarette on yout tank while he was filling the oil... it would make the right size burn.

DONT PANIC! I have an 03 and it has the same exact thing. I wonder if that's amark from when they molded this thing. You know when plastic things have "tabs"? Maybe Evil-Twin can help out with this pic. Don't sweat it. LMAO! They are ordering a new one? If we're talking about the same thing, I hope I'm not looking at your car by accident. If it is yours, get it out of my garage! It's on top of the collant tank near the inner part of the bottle right?
Here you go .. I just took this ... just for you!

That mark is called a gate. It's the place where the injection nozzle, Its actualy called a hot pipe in this application.. this is where the melted plastic is injected into the mold...after a few seconds it freezes off and the nozzle is extracted ( nozzle break )leaving that little dimple... the mold halfs open and ejector pins on the opossing side cycle the part out of the moving side of the mold and the part drops out of the machine..
with little exception 99 % of all injection molded parts have these gate marks, and on the opposite side have ejector pin marks.. this is not to be confused with SMC parts. All those little latches on the three compartment covers and the foot well cover are my design...also the lock mechanism and latch on the glove box and console.
... and that's why I look to the Forum for info. I guess the service department will have a good laugh when I come in next week. Thanks to everyone for their answers and photos.
By the way, do all of the tanks have these, and if so, how come my washer tank doesn't?
Ya, seeing that for the first time made me a little pissed. One of my first jobs was working for an injection molding company and we did better work than that. Very cheap looking...

No way!! That's too cool! I didn't know that you designed that! Learn something new everyday!!
PS. Good job!!

Do I know how to pick my heros or what?!! You are truly da man Bill!
Here is a CTI for you ! (choice tidbit of information ) from the inside. after developing this latch, we were going to offer colors to match the interior, the cost of production to each latch was 1.5 cents. The interior design manager ( who answers to the production cost mgr. ) said NO. This cost management is the reason we get such a great car at an affordable price. BTW here is a picture of some prototypes I made while in the design phase.. These are torch red... I made these several years before I bought my Torch red C5. I'm the only guy on the planet with color coordinated latches...
