Default MN6-spd Tranny Problems

03' MN6 - 30,000 miles - Torque Tube & Clutch replaced at 8,000 miles.

Ok was at a stop light, light turned green, I released the clutch with it in 1st gear, heard a loud thump like noise and it poped into neutral ... figured, ok that was weird and drove it off. When I got off the interstate I stopped at another light and went to go put it in 1st, wouldn't go into first. It felt like the feeling you get off 2nd gear when it does the 2-to-4 so i started in 2nd to get her going ... now it's working fine.

... so any idea, suggestions? I'm not very knowledgable regarding manual transmissions.

and I dont dump the clutch or do donuts or anything, heck she hasn't even seen the track ... I have reved it up high (3ish) and let the clutch out slowly by accident a few times.

Thanks,
Kyle

ttt .. btw I messed around with the car today, attempted to lower the backend without directions I was unsuccessful but I also noticed a slight whine from the backend, only heard from underneth the car with the clutch in and when i drove it around the block, i tried from a dead stop to put it into 3rd and it wouldn't let me, then 2nd did the same, then i put the clutch out and back in, tried and it was ok .. it just feels like i'm pushing against a wall. help.

i'm going to schedule a gm visit, i guess. But it'd hoped maybe somebody here might be able to give me a little light so that gm doesnt go blindly tearing my car apart, "yeh, here's your problem, your muffler bearings are shot to hell"

Not sure what could be causing this but while you are under warranty I would be getting it checked out. Tranny work can get expensive. Best of luck getting this fixed.

Never heard of a problem like that. Take it to a GM dealer.

Hey Kyle,

I don't think you have a problem...the big klunk sound does not inspire confidence.....

If you are not too knowledgeable about six speeds, it may be nothing. I have had a hard time getting into 1st gear many times.....

All I do if I can't get it into 1st is leave it in neutral and push the clutch all the way in. Then i release it, the next time i hit the clutch it falls right into place.....

Or you can try to shift into third or second and it should pop into first.

Does anything i just wrote make sense? Just shoot me an e-mail if you have any questions...

"blindly tearing my car apart, "yeh, here's your problem, your muffler bearings are shot to hell"

I can assure you, the muffler bearings in Vettes will never wear out, as they are made from sintered "unobtanium"

But seriously, it may just be that you are not getting it all the way into gear and thus when you put the torque to it, it pops out of gear. If you still have warranty, why not let them take a look to ease your mind?

Why was the torque tube and clutch replace @ 8K miles?

Yeah, probably won't hurt to go by the dealer, BUT I've seen something similar... a "false first" with this tranny.

It feels like it's in first gear, or seems to be, because of familiarity we assume it is, but it's not fully in gear and pops out with a pretty startling bang when the clutch is released. However, I'd have expected you to have encountered this phenomenon long before now, if it's the culprit and you're the original owner.

When this happens it cannot just be jammed back into first, but must be moved to another gear and then reingaged.

With a T-56 that sometimes does this, one gets used to giving the shifter an extra solid little push each time to make sure it's really in first, even though it may only do this once ever 6 months to a year. It doesn't seem to hurt anything, just startling and annoying as h**l.

All the best.

torque tube along with clutch and several other components were replaced due to excessive clutch chatter.

thanks and i think i'll bring it in to gm to have it documented just in the offshot it turns into something later down the road.

it just doesn't feel right.

I was reading up and i think maybe some of my rumbling problems might be caused by a worm throwout bearing because it seems like the marbles in a can noise in happening more and more, specifically when the clutch goes in or comes out

.. anyways, thanks again for the help. let's see what the people at gm have to say.

I agree, I dont think there is a problem at all. Both my LT4 and my new C5 have done this especially with reverse. When it does it, I dont even think about it anymore I just (out of habit) go to third then reverse goes right into place. It feels exactly the way you described too, "a brick wall". Just try going to 3rd then right back to 1st/reverse. The dealer is going to automatically assume you need a shift fork replaced if you tell him it "popped" out of gear.

Remember the dealers point of view:
"Replace the most expensive thing first and work you way down, he can afford it, he owns a Corvette."
