Corvettes & Speed Limits
- First, we are guilty of "DAC", Driving A Corvette. Nothing we say will change that.
- Second, we each make a decision to obey or disobey the law which establishes the speed limits and we have to accept the consequences of our decision.
- Third, the speed limits, in my opinion, are too low (More on that in another post)
- Fourth, the Cops only have one tool that they can use to control traffic and that is Radar or any other method of measuring a driver's speed. Radar is accepted across the county in all courts and the typical judge believes that if you got clocked at a speed above the limit, you are guilty. Most drivers also accept this and simply send in their check when caught so the Cop does not even have to appear in court.
- Fifth, the real problem is the NUTS on the highway who:
- Go slow in the left lane
- Follow too close
- Pass on the right
- Weave in and out of traffic
- Are Drunk or Stoned or Sleepy
…but the Cops have no tool to solve these problems. It is a judgment call. If the Cop charges someone with Reckless Driving, he has to go to court, and he usually has to face a "high powered" defense attorney who will eat him alive on the witness stand. So with the exception of the drunks, the Cops usually don't bother with these offences because they know they will waste a day or more in court and probably lose anyway.
SO, What Do I Do?
- First, I make sure that I am never the fastest car on the road. I move with the traffic and try to stay in the right land as much as possible. I drive a lot on the interstate highways, normally with the cruise control set at 80, and let the faster driver's wiz by me and collect the tickets from the Cops ahead of me. But when there are a bunch of cars going 85 or 95, I match their speed but hang back as far as I can.
- And when I do get stopped (17 times in the last three years) when the Cop walks up to my car, before he has a chance to speak I say:
"Tell me Officer, did you stop me to complement me on my excellent driving skills or did you profile my Corvette? Because we both know that I am not the fastest car on this highway."
The first time I got stopped in my Vette I bit my tongue, accepted the ticket, and then sent in my check. But the more I thought about it, the madder I got, and I have used "profiling" defense successfully ever since. As long as I am not the fastest car on the road, or following too close, or weaving in and out of traffic, the "profiling" defense works.
Try it!
It will work for you too!
