Default For The Record! (c.l.bypass)

I've been on this forum a relatively short time. I usually read about the CLB. It appears to me that the new members think that if they go to the dealer, that the dealer (through the warranty work) will fix the problem. I'm not sure, but from what I have read in past posts that the only thing that you can do is to install the bypass. It would seem that a dealer would have some sort of liability issue with that.
Basically, if this is true, then everyone should know that for 50 dollars go and order it. Because if you don't do it you are going to be in a bad position and just maybe at the worst possible time!
I have recently read posts that said the column locked during driving., which prompted me to order mine NOW! Previously, I was going to wait a while fearing that I could get stuck somewhere and since mine isn't a daily driver I wasn't overly concerned. BUT during driving?????????????????
Anyone who doesn't have it: you better do it NOW!!!!!!!!

If you take your Vette to the dealer, they WILL (as in MUST) check for any outstanding campaigns that might include your vehicle. They will then apply any campaigns that your vehicle qualifies for.

Others have posted here that the dealer will remove the CLB, flash the PCM (which is the campaign), and leave the CLB on the seat. You'll have to reinstall the CBL when you get back home.

This campaign isn't really too big of a deal except:

1. Your baby is at the dealer.
2. They will reflash your PCM (not good if you have a custom tune).
3. You'll still need a CLB for your peace of mind.

Hope this helps.

Mine is a 2000 A4 and I had the recall work done this week. No problem. There is no re-programming needed or done on A4s as the actual locking pin is removed. Without the pin, it simply can't lock so I don't really see a need for a CLB for something that can no longer lock.

I've heard conflicting stories on custom tuning and re-programming so I'm not really sure of the recall's effect on tuning. It would seem best to confirm it if you're getting the recall work done on a M6.

I got the a4 kit yesterday from the dealer,, it consists of a harness that looks like a relay, a new clip ring and a new lock plate,, have not read the instruction yet.....no reprogramming needed......

You are correct in as much as the dealer can not legally remove the column lock pin motor from an MN6 . The A4 guys can go and have the fix done and they will not have an issue... The MN6 guys are still subject to a column lock at start up, or a column lock while moving, but now their will be a fuel shut off... which is not a cure.. just a bandaide...
Adding the column lock bypass kit, which removes the pin motor
( 55 dollar after market kit ) you will never have another issue with a column lock problem. The dealer can not legally remove this pin motor but you can... I've had my column lock bypass for five years... I have yet to see anyone have a problem with an after market bypass kit, or another issue with the problem because the problem ( pin motor ) is removed from your car.

That made more sense than the entire 8,246 threads I've seen on the subject. Oops. 8,347, 8, 9, .........

ArmyVette pretty much sums it up. Even if I get the recall done, I will keep the CLB on the car.

How hard is it to install the COLUMN LOCK BYPASS? Any threads on showing step by step instructions for those of us scared to work on these cars? Where is the best place to buy one? Thanks.
