It eliminates the 1 -4 shift required by the computer if you don't accelerate hard or long enough in first gear. It is worth it if you take off easy, but a little more loud pedal is all that is needed. It is a personal preference thing.
This feature was developed to maintain fuel efficiency ratings for the C5.
Out of the owner's manual:
One to Four Shift Light
(Manual Transmission)
When this light comes on, you can only shift from FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) instead of FIRST (1) to SECOND (2).
You must complete the shift into FOURTH (4) to turn
off this feature. This helps you get the best possible
fuel economy.
After shifting to FOURTH (4), you may downshift
to a lower gear if you prefer.
NOTICE:
Do not try to force the shift lever into SECOND (2)
or THIRD (3) when the 1 TO 4 SHIFT light
comes on. Do not try to re-engage FIRST (1)
after starting to shift into FOURTH (4). You will
damage your transmission. Shift only from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) when the light
comes on.
This light will come on when:
1) The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169_F (76_C),

All you have to do is crawl under the car and disconnect the CAGS solenoid. I believe MidAmerica sells a dummy plug to put in line for about 15 bucks. Dummy plug just keeps dirt out of the factory plug, and keeps the wires from flapping in the breeze...
The eliminator is cheap and easy to install. I never hit the skip shift feature going straight, always seemed to happen going around a corner in traffic.

The empty half of the plug goes into the tranny to seal up that plug. There's also a resistor in the connector the attaches to the harness itself. The resistor sends the correct voltage to the PCM to make it think the circuit is still connected.

A little more than that if you don't want a trouble code and constant nagging by the DIC. The computer expects to see a load equivalent of 2.2K ohms. If that load isn't there the computer starts sending trouble codes because it assumes the solenoid skip shift lockout isn't firing. The skip shift elimantors have a plug with the 2.2K resistor built in.

Its a piece that you can buy and plug into the side of your transmission and it allows you to bypass the 1-4 shift that is standard on the car for fuel efficiency reasons. Is it worth it - IMO it certainly is. I like the ability to row through the gears without the car telling me which one to pick.
Trust us all, the skip shift eliminator is one of the greatest 20 bucks you will ever spend on your vette!
It allows you to use all gears without that annoying shift from 1st to 4th. I hated that sound of my shift from 1st to 4th and feeling it bog out and people look over with that expression of, "Man that guy doesnt know how to drive!"
The CAGS eliminator was the first mod I did to my car. I is the best $20 I have spent. If you go around a corner, you know what gear you'll be able to do it in.
