Default Having bad day- column locked

I've owned my car for over 1.5 years driven just about every day, and its not given me any trouble. The previous owner told me he had the column lock serviced and cost him $400. Today I thought about goin to Carlisle but then I turned on my car to turn it around yup the column had locked. Tried jiggling, a few other things but nope. I'm glad it happened here at home and not if I was somewhere else, or worse on the road driving (if thats possible...) although I suppose if it happened up at carlisle I coulda fixed it right there. Darn the column lock. Guess I should have had it disabled when I was reading about it....live and learn eh? So much for carlisle... not cool to roll up there in a honda civic or the crotch rocket..

Top it off, I lost a turtle today (escaped) so im not really having a good day and tomorows my birthday.. ugh.

Here's a wave to cheer your day. I just ordered the Column Lock Bypass from Corvettes of Houston. Had the recall (ECL) done last week. What a waste of time. So many people are suffering the ill effects of this, quite a few while driving, and GM is dicking around turning off the fuel supply. Hope you find your turtle and Happy Birthday...

Try this..take the lower column cover off. Smack the ECL with a hammer and try cycling the key. This is how I get them in the shop when they are towed in. Works every time. You may have to pull fuse 25 to cycle the BCM also.

Yes, you need to get the pin to retract. There is sometimes a mechanical interference that by using the hammer, it will retract.
Good luck

You're right, good thing it happened at home. Unfortunately, you will have to get the column unlocked before you can install the CLB. Best of luck - sorry it ruined your planned trip to Carlisle.

Thanks for the advice, that is what I wound up having to do... I removed the lower colum cover, along with all the other pieces of trim that had to be removed first, then I took a rubber mallet and whacked it a few times and it unlocked. Got the car in the garage, left the key in it and will order the CLB first thing monday.

Is that the only sure way to make sure it doesnt happen again? Cause with my luck my car will get stolen cause theres no CLB there.

Kinda on the fence now- I was reading how 98 and 97s sometimes do not like the CLB. With my luck my car will be one where the CLB does not work properly.

Seriously though, I might be able to get by a day or so without using my car but since I've "unlocked" my car, I've actually pulled the key, heard it lock, then turn it back onto "ACC" and heard it unlock. Since its locked once is there any more risk of it locking again, or are my odds about the same?

It'd be a crapshoot but at least you know what to do if it happens again.

The CLB may create new problems
