HOLY SCHIZZELNIT.....I just sold the 97 coupe and bought an 03 Z06 yesterday. I am so pleased with this supercar. It's pull from 4000rpms to 6000rpms is spooky scary. What an awesome machine!
I have three observations / questions for fellow previous C5 / current Z06 owners:
1. I was able to get to 73mph in 2nd at redline (6000rpms) in the coupe, but in the Z, I'm only able to get to 65mph at redline (6500rpms). Is this a gearing difference between the MN6 coupe and the Z06?
2. Lowering the Z -- how far can you lower the Z on the stock bolts, and are there any negative impacts from lowering (besides potential scraping)?
3. If there's any room for improvement (hard to believe), what's the first MOD under $500 you would do to get the best performance increase?
Welcome from another Newby Z Owner (also new to Vettes). I cant answer the lowering questions or the Mod for under $500 that will give you any real noticeable increase. I suspect the best you will do for under $500 may be a few HP with some kind of intake upgrade, which probably wont be very noticeable. As many will tell you, the stock Z breathes very well already with the stock airbox and exhaust and is already fairly maxed out with its stock fuel injector setup. If your Z happens to be completely stock, you may be best off spending that initial $500 on aftermarket shifter (hurst, kirban, etc) and CAGS delete which would be about $200 if you install yourself. You will still have enough left over to get a decent aftermarket intake like a blackwing for a few HP at best if you so choose.
As far as speeds go at redline, that definitely would be related to gearing differences in the Tranny. Here is some good info on the ratio differences between the Z and Coupe 6 Speeds:
The MN6 and MN12 are actually different in every gear but 4th.
LS1/MM6 LS6/M12
1st Gear 2.66:1 2.97:1
2nd Gear 1.78:1 2.07:1
3rd Gear 1.30:1 1.43:1
4th Gear 1.00:1 1.00:1
5th Gear 0.74:1 0.84:1
6th Gear 0.50:1 0.56:1
Reverse 2.90:1 3.28:1
I lowered my fronts as far as possible on the stock bolts and lowered the rear to match, ensuring the rear was about 1/4-1/2 inch higher than the fronts as measured at the frame right behind the front wheels and right in front of the rear wheels to prevent lift. This ended up with about 3-4 threads remaining on the stock rear bolts.
This was plenty low enough for me. I scrapped my air damn quite often on driveways, etc and would not have wanted to go lower.
Perhaps you already have had this done. For performance improvements under $500. When I bought my Z16 my dealer installed a solenoid switch that prevented my 6 spd for shifting from 1st to 4th gear on slow starts around town. I hated the CAGS kicking me over to 4th gear. This little device prevents it and you can install it yourself. Costs about $25.
