My Car Officially DIED - Water Through Intake
Hey All,
Got caught in a flash flood here in El Paso (if you can believe that) and sucked water through my Blackwing and into the engine. DOH! No electrical problems at all, just engine, intake, and radiator gunked with mud and grass. The car is currently at the dealership (yikes) and they are in contact with my insurance company.
I was hoping that someone who has had done the same as me could let me know what to expect. Am I looking at a complete rebuild, or will I need a new engine? I'm also wondering if they will just consider it a total loss and pay current car value.
I'm pretty bummed right now and am stuck driving my '92 Ford Ranger. I'd appreciate any info. and encouragement.
Thanks,
Matt

Trying to post a reply has become an ordeal. But that's nothing compared to yours. Sorry for the loss.
A lot depends on whether your engine stalled out or had hydrolock and major internal damage. Obviously if stalled you would probably be looking at repairs.
Whether or not your car is totalled depends on its age and the cost of repairs/replacing the engine (if that is necessary).
The good thing is that you have coverage.

I was talking to my insurance agent here in New Jersey this weekend. I was talking to him about the water ingestion issue since we seem to be getting pelted with rain lately out here. Anyway, according to him you can claim water damage on your comp on your insurance policy. You might want to look into that. Sorry about your ride......but it could be worse.

I seriously doubt if they will call it a total loss. If it is hydrolocked, you're probably looking at a rebuild. Several grand, but insurance should cover. I would just hope for your sake that the dealer/insurance company doesn't consider the Blackwing a "modification" that would void any insurance claims. Good luck to you bro.

That's a fear I have down here in Florida. You can be in a flash flood here virtually every day during the summer... That's why I try not to drive it too much...in the afternoons anyway..

It's really going to depend on what damage you have. I know that the end of last week, a lexus.com member hydrolocked his GS430 motor. The insurance company totalled it due to 20K in repairs. He drove into a gas station and didn't realize how deep the water was. It was 20K for the motor and related labor and parts.

I hope you removed the black wing and reinstalled the factory air filter. They look for any excuse to get out of a repair.

I had the motor in my C4 Hydrolock. It bent the connecting rod in the # 4 cylinder into an “S” shape until it jammed up against the inside of the block and seized the engine. I have to admit, it was mostly my fault as I had done the Simple Green engine wash and some water managed to get inside the intake while I was I washing down the engine. I played totally innocent at the dealer as to what might have happened and luckily my warranty covered the repairs. Basically they only had to replace the #4 piston and one connecting rod. The repairs would have been about $2 thousand if I had to pay outta my pocket.

There have been stories of people with stock intakes getting hydrolocked. Some people forget to realize their car is twevle inches off the ground ..
I've worried about hydroluck a few times being in florida. The situation sucks.
Good luck with the repairs.
