Default question regarding shifting the A4

Should I be able to shift from D to 3 without depressing the button? I wouldn't think so, but it will.

My 03 will not shift from D to 3 without depressing the button. However it will shift from 1 to 2 to 3 to D to N and back to D without depressing the button.

That's exactly the way mine works, too. And once the button is depressed to shift from D to 3, it will shift up and down from 3 to 1 or 2 without depressing the button.

My '00 will glide from reverse through neutral to overdrive without using the button. To downshift further I need to use the button. I can glide from 1st up to neutral without using the button but cannot get to reverse without using the button. I should think by dragging the button through the gears it would cause abnormal wear.

that's how every other car I've had worked.
But the vette will let me go up (from 1 to N) without the button, and you can always go from N to D... but if I slap it just a little to hard it'll go into 3 or even 2.
Is that something I should have fixed?
