But I use a Rat Shack GMRS radio. It's 5 watts versus the half watt limit on FRS radios. The message definitely "gets out". Only problem is that FRS and GMRS radios only interface on channels 1 through 7, so it is necessary to use one of those if everyone is going to be on the same page.

and a "legal" FRS radio can only output one-half a watt TX power.

"legal" FRS useage forbids any external antenna; and are limited to 1/2 watt TX power. That's why you see many FRS radios that have permanent mounted flex antennas (so you can't connect an external antenna to the radio)
the best a person can do right now with a "no-license-needed" handheld is a MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service) setup. It's VHF. Though limited to 2 watts, there are no restrictions on the type of antennas used.
2 watts at VHF frequencies can travel quite a distance; and out perform "legal" 1/2 watt FRS UHF radios; and VHF excells in areas of less than perfect terrain. The MURS frequencies are:
151.82, 151.88, 151.94, 154.57, and 154.60.
Problem is... FRS took off so quickly that MURS sales are slow... so many stores are not carrying them.

Are club use CB's better range than two/ways, lots of channels, and other uses. Cobra has one with everything built in to the mic. no big box to look at or hide. cost about $80.00
