I know this sounds strange, but it sounds like someone imitating a drummer with a rythmic sound tapping comming from the dash area, but only occassionally does it occur, usually after the car has been driven for a while. Just turned 18K. Any help would be appreciated.

I had a rhythmic metal tapping sound "from the dash" of my 1999 since I purchased it new.
One day I opened the hood and saw the right front hood hinge "lift" as I opened the hood (where it is fastened to the frame). I found the two nuts loose on the studs and tightened them. The left side hood hinge nuts were tight. This eliminated the noise.
My car was built immediately following the infamous UAW work stoppage and I am convinced the hinge nuts were left loose on purpose.
Check the hinge stud nuts for tightness. Good luck.
No help, other than misery loves company, but I have one too: never when first run/cold. Usually appears after awhile. Location is "in the upper dash". I suspected heat as in dash warming in sun, and/or when running heater w/top down. My noise is not loud but jes'enough to p iss you off. No clue as nothing seems amiss and not sure I want to go digging for a "fix".

I had what I thought was a dash rattle on my C4 while under warranty. The dealership had it over and over. One day, I think fourth time in, they had some body "expert" come over and look. He took a ride with me and said, "It's the famous dash hood rattle!" I was like, "What the hell is that?" Turned out that the adjuster stops for the hood needed so be snugged up against the hood more. It was so weird that nearly everyone else, including me, heard the sound coming from the dash.
Just thought this might help you start thinking "outside the dash, er, box".
I had a tapping noise in my dash. Turned out the clicking from the injectors was traveling through the fuel rails and being transferred into the dash. A little Dynomat on the firewall solved the problem. Hard to figure out though.
