Help? Finally got my recall notice for the steering column lock which I had paid for about 2 weeks ago. This is the second time that GMC manages to wiggle their way around paying for a recall item. A year or so took my Blazer in because there was a recall on the wipers. They said that wasn't exactly what was wrong with the wiper blades. It was something else. Now on the vette they are saying that the recall for the steering column lock is different than the repair I had to have done on my car 2 weeks ago! I just don't understand. Can someone help me to understand what is going on with these people? Can it really be something other than what I had repaired?
What will be done under this recall depends on whether your car is an A4 or a M6 but it is not the same as what they may have done for a previous column lock. You should not have had to pay for a previous column lock and there is a claim procedure in the recall papers to get reimbursed for those expenses.
For an A4 a new harness kit is installed and the actual locking pin dissabled. There is no re-programming on an A4.
For a M6 the dealer is to check the pin's clearance and reflash the PCM so that the fuel shut off works when the column is locked. It is highly debated that this remedies the situation for the M6s and so many are getting (or re-installing) the CLB to be sure after having the recall work done.
