OK here's the deal. I have a new 2004 vert that I had for about 2 months and it has 2000 miles on it and all I have done to the car is installed the halltech stringer intake.

Last night when I was driving, the freaking CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came on out of no where. So I was like, WTF. I pull over shut the car and restart it hopeing the light would go away. NO. The light was still on. So I parked it and came back after three hours or so and restarted it, again the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT was on. Well I have no other choice but to drive the car, so after a few stops, I decided to drive home. Well as I driving, the light went off and I was kind of confused.

When I got home, I started reading other threads of ENGINE LIGHT and found a way to check the codes.

Here is what I found:

10-PCM 2 codes

p0171 H

p0174 H

Something about lean back 1 and lean back 2.

Now I was wondering what should I do? The engine light did go away on its own, but the codes are still there. Does this mean that the problem is still there and the check engine light is off?

I mean you buy a BRAND new car to avoid things such as this and this happens. Kinda pisses you off. Well if anyone can relate and provide me some advice, that would be greatly apperciated. I did call the dealer and made an appointment for next tuesday. Does the car need to go to the dealer or dose it need an LS1edit? I am so lost and pissed. Has to happen on the last long weekend of the summer.

Thanks guys.

Frankly - a check engine light is not something I would ignore. The codes are telling you something is amiss. The car is brand new, and the obvious solution is to go back to the dealer service department.

Yes - anything going wrong on a new car (any car for that matter) is a P.I.T.A., but ownership of a new car is certainly not a guarantee that it will be perfect. I guess that's why they offer a 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty. Heck, you could spend over a $100K on a Mercedes or a BMW and still have things break or go wrong.

My advice is take the car to the dealer, let them diagnose the trouble and take a corrective action. Also - chill out and take it in stride, it doesn't mean you got a lemon or a defective car. Have a great long weekend and relax!

I had the same exact codes after a day of racing. Same exact symptoms, light wouldn't turn off, then just magically disappeared when I was driving home. Another forum member said it had to do with the cats over heating or something. Can't really remember. It's been well over a year and the code hasn't returned. So I'd have to say it's no big deal. You should have nothing to worry about. But if you want peace of mind, just take it to the dealership.

The H indicates - history - and not a current problem. I wouldn't worry too much unless it happens again - then get it checked out. You will find these electronic marvels have a mind of their own and sometimes there is no reading them! Many of us get strage codes that go away on there own - most never to be seen again. I think your codes have to do with fuel/air management and the computer probably corrected it as you drove. More knowledgeable folks will chime in.

As to my earlier post I remember what was said to me of this code. The fellow member said when the cats overheat it leans the car out to help cool it off faster.

Default Check Engine Light

Well I've had my vert about two months and yesterday with 4600 miles on it on the way to work I got zapped by a red light camera and my check engine light came on at the same time. I called the dwealer and he said its nothing to worry about if the light isn't blinking. I wasa already scheduled for a recall on the lower control arm for the 16th of sept and he said they would take care of it then and i could keep driving it.

Check this thread, refer to Jim Hall's posts. The intake, as it relates to the MAF, is the cause of the codes.

The odd thing is that I always keep my AC on so the fans would kool the car. My temp never went over 220 + so why would that cause things to overheat and throw the check engine light?

Good question. Just don't know the answer to that. I was just relaying the info I was given. I thought the same thing too, because the racing event was only a 1/4 mile run, and I probably did about 6 or 7 passes and my engine temps never really got too hot. Or maybe as someone else stated earlier that sometimes the electricals do weird things. Maybe one of the sensors just went a little crazy for a bit.

It's possible your car was on the lean side to begin with and you added more air to the engine with the intake change. In some cases it can drive your O2 sensors a little crazy. But because of the modification - I don't know if that will still qualify under warranty. If it continues - I'd get it checked out as you don't want to run too lean.
