Went to pick up my 04 CE yesterday from the dealer, was in for deer damage to the front end. Anyway, I noticed the calipers had white flaky spots on them and instead of being the nice dark gray, they were a light, almost aluminum color with like water spots all over them. Make a long story short, did not accept the car, for the calipers and the bodywork. What the heck could they of done to the calipers in cleanup and more importantly can it be fixed without repalcing them? I guess the gray is just paint on them and they possibly powerwashed it off? I don't know!
Are you sure that you are referencing the calipers and not the rotors?
On our '04 CE the calipers were painted black.
If you are refering to the rotors, a quick drive, with breaking, should remove any discoloration.
Its the calipers. They look dark gray to me, I suppose you could say black as well. Best part is that I have a photo of the damage the day before it went to the shop that shows the caliper. I suppose all they can do is repalce them back to OEM standard.
If they were speckled then I would say they may have had compound or wax residue on them. Pulling the wheel and cleaning them off would be all it should take.

Sounds like that may just be dust from body work, etc. The dealer should have washed the car and wheels down before delivery.
They no kidding appear to be permanently discolored. Is it possible that they used some kind of cleaner or high pressure water to remove the paint and/or discolor the caliper? They really look bad, like they have been sitting in salt water for a year! I bet they'll have to replace them, I'll know next week. Has anyone ever heard of something like this from cleaning?

That's what i was thinking too. One way to try to tell is look at the aluminum on the front suspension. If it is residue from the bodywork, the A arms probably look like crap too. If they look great, well, I don't want to think about who drove it and how.

Seems like a logical and reasonable test. I would think the dealership has a lot of explaining if only the calipers are discolored.

When you checked in your vette the service dept should have recorded your mileage. If you did, so much the better. Check it! There shouldn't have been any need to test drive it, if it only had body work!!

Can you be more specific? I am not sure what we are talking about here. Let me know and you can bet I'll check it out good!

If it is dust from the body work - it would have gotten on more than just the calipers. The A-arms are the suspension parts from the frame to the wheels. Dust would have settled on them, too, if it is from body work. If only the calipers have this condition and nothing else - it's a good sign that something else caused it. Like toasting your brakes.
