Just out of curiosity, for those of you who bought an automatic, why did you do it? Considering the type of car that a Corvette is, wouldn't a manual be more appropriate?
I have a 6-speed BMW that's a little quicker than my '04 automatic Vette, and I really prefer stick shifts. But I bought the automatic Corvette because I have an aging parent in Philadelphia that I visit, and you haven't lived until you've been caught in heavy traffic on the George Washington Bridge and have pushed the clutch in 300-400 times in an hour!
1) Lazy
2) Less distracting, frees me to do other things
3) Wife isn't intimidated by the car
Though I had to weigh the decision with what I knew at the time about the diference... little worse gas mileage, significant loss of power to the wheels (hey any loss is significant, right : -) and what I thought while shopping and before driving was that the stick is the only one that could light up the tires from a standstill (glad that myth got busted)
...and just curious, does anyone else here feel like the original thread author was actually asking a valid question and that he was really looking for actual responses to that question?... was a bit suprised to see how negative this has gotten, almost as if some are posting to a while diferent thread than the one that was created originally.
I bought the A4 due to some traffic driving, etc. Now wish I had the M6, just to be more involved. Probably a "grass is always greener...." thing.
If I were to buy a new one today, it would be an M6 and I know it would drive me nuts. If they come out with a A5 or A6, I'm back to the auto. I know we've got torque galor but 4 speeds just isn't enough. I find it interesting that GM makes the A5 that was in my 94 BMW 740 and that was the BEST tranny I've ever driven. Even had "learning" capability to your driving style. And it was about 300HP V8, so I'm thinking it could handle it.
But what I REALLY want is a paddle shift option and a switch for how fast it shifts. Most of the time its just slap it in D and shift like smooth mush. But when I flip the switch, I want to shift with my hands on the wheel like a real race car and have it slam through the gears.
I look at Auto Corvette's and cringe. An Auto should never be in a vette or any sports car of it's caliber. I wouldn't even pay $1 for an auto corvette. That's just me though.
Good grief! This just goes on and on and on, same old, same old.
Now, when do we get that sequential box . . ?
I owned a 2000 A4 when an A4 suited my needs, now I've got an MN6 because that's what I want now. The only car I'd swap the MN6 for (if I really HAD to) is an A4
FWIW, I feel that the automatic with a shift kit is the best of both
worlds. I have owned manual equiped cars, but with the automatic
and a shift kit I have the option to manually shift down or just leave
it in gear, mash the throttle to the floor and hang on. Everyone has
their preference and the automatic is what I like.

I feel the same about COUPE corvettes....Yanno it would be fun to smoke you with a auto with the top down from light to light.
coupes look like turtles the rounded back and all looks like a turtles shell.
