Default Fuel Guage

A real simple question.. how much gas is left when the low fuel light comes on in my '03 coupe? I was driving back from my son's HS football game at a town 80 miles away in the mountains and in the middle of nowhere the light came on. The needle was at the bottom of the second red mark and I was sweating it out thinking I'd be walking all night. When I made it to a gas station I was surprised to see it would only take a bit over 14 gallons, even after topping it off till gas was buubling up. I know it's stupid not to fill up before the trip, so what's the real answer?

The best answer is that many C5 gas gauges get a build up that causes their readings to be unreliable, and unless you really know your car and track your mileage, you could have anywhere between a full and empty tank when the gauge reads empty. Most cars have something less than 2 gallons when their gauges read empty
