Thats a nice stereotype. How many young kids do you even see in vettes? Not many. The few that I know, aren't reckless. Its the old people, that think they are young just because they drive a fast car, that are the ones to watch out for. Their reflexes aren't good, their senses aren't good, and they aren't as "with it" as they used to be. Doesn't surprise me that a 65 year old man lost control of a vette and killed people. Its a shame, and I feel for everyone involved and their families, but I'm not going to be easy on him for being an idiot.
I guess that's why their insurance is so low, huh... Actually, vettes have been around for awhile and weren't always so expensive. They were fast in the 60's (when kids could afford them) and there were just as many idiots then as they're are now..
Sorry if I offended you, but I think I'm mostly right...
...................I have nothing but respect for LEOs. They take on a Job/Responsibility that most of us wouldn't want if it paid a million dollars. To blame them for the insane actions of someone trying to escape is HUA thinking. What should they do? The emergency equipment on their cars is their to alert innocent motorist that some criminal or some other danger is nearby. To say that by chasing a speader is endangering the public is rediculous. They are reacting to the actions of this speeder. Do you think this guy would have slowed down if the police weren't there? If you do, may I remind you what people were like when LEOs werent around during the LA riot!
P.S. If you're still not convinced I would suggest you take a "Ride-a-long" with your local Law enforcement agency and find out what they REALLY have to deal with before you contaminate the rest of the population with this ignorance.
Today's Seattle paper said the accident was still under investigation so there could be other reasons or contributing factors. As tragic as this is for both the decedents, the injured people and their respective families - we just don't know all the facts yet. Whatever the cause, it's still a very sad case.
...and what anyone thinks...isnt knowing...
...and conclusions such as thats why we should leave drags on the dragstrip and running from the law are premature and without evidential facts... uhh....thats what I think...and my condolences to the survivors of the accident and relatives and friends of the deceased...
Most of the replies in this thread regarding the incident are wrong. I won't even waste my breath.
Leo & Penny were one of the most active CMCS & NCRS members.
Jeffvette,
Now that you've given a name to the victims of this accident, I hope we all stop for a minute and say a little prayer for them and their family. We are all deminished when something like this happens.
I think all the prior posts are the result of people trying to make sense of such a horrible tragedy and should not be construed as placing blame .

If you know something specific to the accident, please speak up. Just because they were active CMCS & NCRS members doesn't mean they aren't capable of doing something foolish like weaving in and out of holiday traffic at high speeds. They might have been the nicest people in the world but according to the police they were driving reclessly and paid the ultimate price.
Sure the Vette driver could have pulled over and got a ticket. That is taking responsibility for his actions. It's the second aspect I also don't like. Cops are supposed to assure our safety on the roads, but when the police dept. jeopardizes others on the highway and chases speeders that are way over the speed limit, they are not providing the safety for which they're employed. With the 2-way radios in every police car and the availability of helicopters, there is no reason for this type of conduct.
For those of you who misread (or didn't read) the story, the WSP said: State troopers were running speed traps through the area during that time and the Corvette was one that got away from them.
"We're not going to get everybody," Ramsey said. "We're trying to get as many as we can that are driving excessive(ly fast) and out of control. We're not going to get everybody, and unfortunately, this is the one that we should have got."
No one ever said the 'vette was running or being chased. He just wasn't going fast a few miles earlier where the radar was, so wasn't pulled over (my guess was he probbaly had a radar detector or was slowed by heavy holiday traffic). Whatever happened, it is sad for all involved.
We'll all learn from this for a day or three and then go back to our usual habits, myself included. Too bad.
Here is an email that sets the record straight. For all of you who were quick to assume that the driver of this car. Leo Fix, and his wife Penny, were acting in a reckless manner without knowing the facts should be ashamed!
Here is some sad news that needs to go out. Leo and Penny Fix were killed in a car accident on I-5 by Mt Vernon yesterday. In the news and newspaper, it said the Black Corvette was speeding and weaving in and out of Traffic. This was not what happened. What happened is Leo was in the fast lane doing 70 to 75 mph when the car ahead of them kicked up a large piece of debre. Leo tried to miss it and lost control. This information is from the State Trooper who investigated the accident. The Funeral will be at the Arlington Assembly of God this Saturday at 1:00 pm (09-11-04) Please let everyone know.

PS Sorry I don't have the address to the church yet.
Sorry for the loss - I won't pass judgement on Leo and/or Penny, and may they RIP. It's too easy for the local media to take initial reports of "speeding sports cars" and turn them into indictments. And if you're in a 'vette, you can bet you are assumed to be speeding....

Thanks for the additional information and I agree there were a number of completely untrue conclusions jumped to in this thread before any facts were known and many should be ashamed for that. This could happen to any of us - even those who proclaim they NEVER exceed the speed limit.
I wouldn't try to speak for everyone, but for the large Corvette family I do associate with - our hearts and prayers go out for the families involved.

Not to say it was the case here, but debris on the roadway, and the need to take sudden evasive action at speed, is why Active Handling should always be "on."
I have checked a half dozen local news sites for info re: debris on road. So far none have any changes from the original story. I will provide an update link if anything further comes out.
From: Dear Karma, I have a list of people you missed.

That, I trust, is not a statement of which you're particularly proud. I hope not.
That is so very sad
It's only by the Grace of God....it could happen to ANY of us....at almost ANY speed.
A man was killed near here when a sheet of plywood blew from a truck and went through his windshield........I don't think he could have prevented that.
Often is the case when we say or do something without having all the facts. It is our nature and will always be with us. All we can do is try to controll it. Sometimes we can apologize to sort of take it back and sometimes we cant. However I do get bent when news media report the wrong facts or rush in just to get a story to fill a column or tv space. In view of the troopers report, maybe the local club can approach the media who mis-reported it, to retract or correct the details. I know their family and friends know better, but the public often believes only what they read and vette owners get enough bad pr as it is. Just a thot. Best wishes to the families in their time of sorrow.
