Carfax indicates only what has been reported. In my opinion it is almost useless unless the car has been totaled and a salvage title issued. Also mileage on a used car is based on what the previous owner reported, which we all know may or may not be accurate.

All the downsides may very well be true, However, if there is something listed (accidents, salvaged, etc), you certainly wouldnt know if not checked. So long as one is still cautious if nothing substantial is reported, its still worth the check in my opinions.
