Hello everyone, recently joined the Z ownership ranks and have begun modding the car. I've been attempting to search this out on my own, yet have been somewhat unsuccessful finding answers...
I would like to eventually install a cam in my 02' Z. I'm planning on a mild cam with good daily drivability, but one that will still yeild performance benefits over the stock unit. What direction can you guys point me in?
Whatever you choose remember:
- underdrive pulley $300 (your have to take off the existing pulley anyway). +5 to 6hp.
- Module to unlock your PCM $250-$300
- Tune $250-$350
I installed mine with the help of a couple friends. I've never worked on a motor in my life and had a good time learning quite a bit along the way.
LGM charges about $1400 for the kit which includes the cam, comp 921 springs, hardened pushrods, new oil seals/seats, titanium retainers.
I was looking for a cam like the one you described and bought a n accelerated lift cam that gives you the street manners plus the power. The cam is from Vinci High Performance, you'll need better springs, titanium retainers and, if you want to go first class, some hardened push rods, guide plates and full roller rockers. Since your there any way how about an UD pulley with an internal balancer from ATI that will free up another 6 rwhp. Don't forget your 170 stat and a tuner. This is a wish list but you'll only pay one time for the work. The cam install with springs and retainers will cost yoy about 5 hours labor at a speed shop, the per hour price in Missouri ,my home state, will range from 60 to 90 an hour. Gary
must determine how streetable you want car to be knowing that one persons good street manners is another persons nightmare...once you get above 228/114* size cam then the tuning and acceptence of tolerance for drivability comes into consideration...idle, lope, smell, starting, bucking, surging, dieing when AC turned on etc. etc....very dependent on quality of tuner and your tolerance....a big cam if tuned propely can have decent manners...just be careful after you hammer a car with big cam power your judgment can become flawed...
One evening a long time ago I deiceided to install this really radical cam in a small block chevy. Man this thing sounded so nasty as idel ( if you can call 1800 RPM an idle) it was really loping and no one would challenge me on the street. Good thing becaue they would have kicked my *** for a while until this thing hit 4,000 rpm minimum before it did ****.. I yanked it out before long and put a milder cam in and that was a lot better.
Just wish we could do things like that in CA now but the damned smog testing is unbelieveable.

I'm a little on the aggressive side when it comes to auto performance, but not aggressive enough to go with something like the T-Rex...that's a big cam.
I'm leaning towards something in the mid to high 220's and 112-114 Lsa...What's the deal with the 112+2 degrees advanced setup?
My main concern is the reliability of the springs and breakage. I don't want to have to deal with that. Seems to be that the Comp 921's are the way to go.

I have a Futral F11 228/230 112+4. The advance will increase tq, lope, and dynamic compression from what I've read. I'm no expert. The cam drives great adn with the Kooks, offroad x, and GHLs many of the older guys say I sound like the cammed side pipe car they used to own.
If I did a Z06 I think a F13 (230/232) 112 with 3.73 gears would rock and make peak #s close to the more hyped bigger cams.
