Default Caravaggio Shipping. [Weird]

Talked to John Caravaggio yesterday. He advised he had shipped my rear spoiler the day before

Here's the weird part. I got a voice mail from "UPS Supply Chain Solutions" in Ontario, Canada today, advising they needed my SSN to clear the package through US Customs.

1) Why is a company in NJ surface shipping a package that needs to go through Canada? And if so, why would they need MY SSN? Why not the truck driver, et al.
2) Why would this alleged "Supply Chain Solutions" need MY SSN to get a package through US Customs when it was a US Surface shipment?
3) They described my package right down to "Corvette Rear Spoiler from Caravaggio Corvettes" and somehow had my cellphone #.
4) Anyone in the MidWest go through something like this? Ever?

Cuz I'm damn sure not going to give my SSN to ANYONE calling my cellphone asking for it.

5) Who should I call about this?

Thanx.

Michael

(edit: 6) The phone # they left was (937) 898-9555. I called it today out of curiosity, not to leave my SSN, and the voice mail was "UPS Supply Chain Solutions...... Why the US phone # if they're in Canada???? )

Anything coming through customs will need a SS number.
Only way around it is to purchase through and ship to a buisness.
Sucks but that is the only way that I know of

Hey Jim.

Are you saying you've given out your SSN to a shipping company calling and asking for it?

I haven't bolted on quite as much as you, so this is somehow new to me.

That is weird, may be legit but I'd be uncomfortable too.

Is this something new within the last year? I've received lots of stuff from Canada without them knowing my SSAN.

As for how to deal with the current issue, I would call Caravaggio and tell him that you cannot receive anything shipped through foreign hands. He needs to do something about his shipping methods. I would suspect that the piece is manufactured there and is being drop shipped to you. In that case tell him that he needs to have it shipped to himself than he can ship it to you. Sorry, but that's my feeling on the subject.

I wouldn't provide my SSAN to anyone either.

They make them right there in NJ. One at a time. John mentioned there was one last GP buyer to ship and he could get back to his "regular" customers.

But good point. I should let him know about this and see if he's had this problem in the past. I'll give them a credit card # before I'll give them my SSN.

Maybe I'm just a cautious pessimist.

John should know better. This is not good business practice. With identity theft on the rise no one should give out their SSN.

I'm not doing a damn thing until I talk to John. I can't imagine I'm the first customer to place such a phone call if that's what the shipping standard is. I'd have paid more for Air ship if I knew this. I'm only going to be home for a week. I hope this doesn't delay the mod

Hey Michael,

I went through the same thing when John shipped my rear spoiler to me except John himself called me and asked for my SS # before he even shipped the package out. He told me that is all had to do with 9/11 and is now required for packages crossing the border. I wasnt comfortable with it but gave it to him anyways. I know that a lot has changed with all the 9/11 stuff so I just rolled with it and took my chances. The good news is that I dont recall seeing it anywhere ON the package itself so it would be limited as to how many people were able to see that information.

If I remember correctly, I also had the option of giving him the Tax ID number of my company instead of my SS #. I didnt have that info on hand at that moment so I didnt pursue that route.

Good luck man, it should look great when you get it on.

Joe

Hey Joe!!!!

Good answer. Maybe I'll call John on Monday and do the "down-low" program. It's inherent that I won't give my SSN to anyone calling my cellphone.

Buf it John endorses it, I'll squint my eyes and do it. Cuz I gotta have that spoiler!

So are we on for the OMGWABK Tour next year? This time I'll sound like Brian, cuz the LG LT's (no cats) are on order and I'm headed home tomorrow

How is the shipper going to know it's truly YOUR SSN? I'd be inclined to give them something else. :-)

The whole thing sux. I'm just gonna call Jonh on Monday. I might even provide some coaching on the shipping practices.

(937) area code???

Thats my area code here in Dayton, Ohio. I'm betting it is at the shippers hub at the Dayton International Airport. Hell, thats 10 minutes from my house, just give me the word and I'll go pick it up for you and will UPS it to you from my office.

I'm also sending you an Instant Message

Even if you give them your SSN, how are they going to verify it? Something doesn't sound right about this.

I purchased some stuff from John late last year, and a month later received a $75 bill from "UPS Customhouse Brokerage, Inc., P.O. Box 34486, Louisville, Ky. 40232-4486". I checked it out and it was legit (albeit, an unexpected expense), as Caravaggio's website says they're in Concord, Ontario.

I do not know where you guys are getting the idea that Caravaggio is in New Jersey. Says right on their web site Concord, Ontario. http://www.caravaggiocorvettes.com/DEV/orderinfo.html

John built a set of seats for me. I had to send him mine and obviously he sent them back. I went through some of the same stuff when they were coming back. I ship and recieve alot of stuff and I can tell you anything that comes from another Country is going to take longer and be a pain. We recieve alot of stuff from Japan and it often takes 3 to 4 weeks mostly because of customs. I can tell you this for certain..the problem does not lie with John. He is a good guy and has excellent customer service.

I'd call John and get advice. Normally, I wouldn't give out my SSN to anyone.
