I am a psydo-newbie, so go easy on me on this one.
My wheel weights on my magnesium rims are on the outside of the rim.
Several people (including shops that have worked on the car) say they should be on the inside of the rim and someone screwed up by putting them on the outside.
the main reason not to put the weights on the outside is because it can potentially damage the finish. another reason is improperly installed weights can cause a tire to leak. the recommended way is using adhesive backed weights but i've run into a problem with those in how close the caliper runs to the inside of the wheel. i haven't torn mine off yet but i've got pretty nice grooves cut through the weights.
external clip-on style weights have been in use for decades before 'delecate' aluminum or alloy rims became common.
Better balance on the outside, better looking on the inside. If they are already there, and you take them off, you may have to repaint them. If you are willing to do that, I would take them off.

Any insight?
Not really, I have an 04 Coupe with Magnesium rims and the wheel weights are on the outside. It came from the factory the way it is. Wheel weights are also the same color as the wheel itself.

Anyone know the weight of the mag wheels versus the standard ones?
don't know the weight of the OEM alloy wheels but i was surprised at the weight of the mags. i just put some on my car about a month ago. i was surprised that each wheel weighs about 20#. i was expecting more like 12-15 for magnesium but it was noticably more than that. i don't have the exact shipping weight but when i say about 20#, that means more like the 20-22 pound range.
ls1rat, i was assuming that the external clip-on type is what he's referring to. what other kind could he have on the outside of his wheel? you never know what kind of bubba might have done the balance last time if your not the original owner.

When I got mine they had the golden stick-on weights. That's all that could work , I think
Our 00' came with factory mag rims and painted stick on weight outside & inside. The 17" rims will be tough to move the stick ons just behind the spokes. They will hit the caliper. I went with 18" on all 4 295/35/18 rear and 275/35/18 front......stick-ons just inside the spokes and near the outside edge. I paint them with touch-up paint and no issues with weights hitting the calipers!
Notice weight locations on pics!
My 04 MSG vert came with the mag rims and the weights are on the outside for each wheel. They're painted the same gold color though so they really don't stand out to much.
