My 2004 Z16 shuts down around 6300 rpm. This seems a little below what the red line is.if so,can it be changed at my selling dealer? Anybody else with a Z have a similar limit?
It is supposed to be at 6500 rpm however I wonder if it varies a little based on the use of the car. When I was at Watkins Glen earlier this month at first I was hitting the rev limiter in 3rd gear at about 100 mph in the HUD, after several days of running I was able to get 104 before hitting the limiter. The only way that happens is if it reprogrammed itself a little.

From previous posts I have read, the limiter kicks in at about 6250 RPMs. There is also a damping factor on the Tach so your probably running a bit higher than Tach reads at any given moment (The HUD Tach is supposedly more accurate).
The limiter is computer controlled setting and should be able to be changed. I assume the dealer can do it if willing and probably can be changed with some of the programmers one can buy (not 100% sure on that). Also, the timing chain probably cannot take much more than the limit for any extended period, so if planning on running much higher for any extended period, I would suggest upgrading it,
Usually the Tach is running a little slower than the engine, so you may in fact be at 6500 rpm. Most programmers you buy can raise the rev limiter, but it's not really recommended on the stock motor, I wouldn't go more than 6800 tops!, and even then, there may be no real gains in doing that. Your Z06 should peak in power at about 6000 rpms, therefore you should shift after that point anyway. As far as the dealer raising your limiter, they won't. Any speed shop or tuner would gladly do it for you though at a small cost.
Good luck.
Several computer packages like Hypertech will allow you to increase the rev limiter RPM. Mine is set at 7,100. I never hit it because the engine starts to fall off around 6,600-6,700 and I shift by feel. My 2 cents is if you are looking at the tach you are going too slow. Get it raised a few hundred RPM and you will be fine. Don't run the engine at 6,700 RPM for long.
