If you have a DVM, set it on ohms mode and measure the resistance of the pellet on your key. If it is within +-10%, then the car will start.
The 15 resistor codes are:
Key# Value (Ohms)
1 392
2 523
3 681
4 887
5 1130
6 1470
7 1870
8 2370
9 3010
10 3740
11 4750
12 6040
13 7500
14 9530
15 11800
You can order a blank by the number code (1-15) at www.ecklers.com the part number is Part# 35055-x
x being the resistor code. $15.00 plus whatever the locksmith charges to cut it.
so he was able to get the resistor information from your key?
Yes, there is a device they use (which must be a DVM at its heart) which tells them which blank to use, then he just cut the key. There is no additional programming or personalization required to use it, like there is if you get a new FOB - as long as you have the right blank, you're all set. I believe this technology is not unque to Vettes, I think it is a common GM concept.

oops - I forgot about the FOB. Probably will need to get one of those too.
And you say any local key guy has this? I'm assuming places like Walmart would not.

Most good locksmiths should be able to handle this and carry the blanks. Call around your area and ask if they have blank chevrolet keys with the resistor chips. Bring your other key. They'll determine the resistance and cut you a new one. I had an extra made a few months back. (Also keep the receipt with your other car papers, as the locksmith should write which resistor blank he uses for future reference.)
PS - your are correct - "wally-world" can't handle this one!

As long as you can find out what the resistance value is, you can have one made at a local key shop (provided they have the blanks). Should be a lot less cost.
I just had a spare ignition key made today for my 01 Vette. The total price was $18 plus tax. They have the machine to read the resistance and the key works great. They had all the blanks in stock for every code so they are very well equipped.
They are in the Smiths parking lot on the corner of Vegas and Jones if you need a key.
p.s. I just got a key fob off of Ebay and it works great, paid $8 for it. The dealer aint ripping me off on keys and fobs, that's for sure!!!!
