If a tire tread grabs a stone and throws it, then the speed of the stone is the speed of the tire, and therefore the speed of the vehicle. If a tire partially contacts a stone, then the stone may be popped out at a speed potentially greater than the speed of the tire. I think this is a rare event. Since semi's usually don't travel at 200MPH, and 200MPH sounds 'made up', I think the statement you heard is .
Consider yourself lucky that they are paying for it. I have had this happen to a few other cars with no luck trying to get the culprits to pay. Good luck with the repairs.
I too feel your pain. I had my brand new 03 coupe for about two weeks. An oncoming semi shot a rock right into my hood and windshield. Left me with a small chip on the hood and the windshield.
Also, coming back from Mid America's Funfest on I-57 this weekend, got pelted with CORN. Some truck must have lost a few ears.
