My '01 was built late in the model year. It does not have the oil consumption issue.

Although it is not, by any means authoritative, a friend told me that it was only a problem for Z06's built in the first half of production run. He said an engineering change resolved the issue for vehicles built late in the model year.

hope that helps,

dave

I can tell you what symptoms mine would have, all quite subtle.

At 6000 miles, IF it has the problem, it has pumped up to 12 quarts (yes, 3 gallons) of oil out the tailpipe.

The problem is most pronounced at high RPM's with little load. (cruzin at 4,000RPM-ish...not normal for a milk run, but common enough due to you having your fill of the pimple-faced kid next to you in his GT Mustang, and you just want him to go away....behind you.)

If i drove the car in that fashion, after awhile i could walk to the back and notice a couple of things...1st was the wafting odor of burning oil....stink. 2nd was that the whole rear valence would have an oily sheen...not blobs of goo, but more like nasty dust that wouldn't wipe off your fingers...it stained.

There was also a wee bit of goo in the corners of the tailpipe outlets.

I never pulled the plugs to see what they looked like...i always suspected that they must be crudded-up with carbon....might be worth pulling one.

I will say this....I had an oil burning '01, had the problem fixed, and eventually traded it for an 03 (i needed new tires!). I loved that car and i love this one. Knowing what i do now, i would have kept my '01, and built it out rather than get the 03. Even IF the car has the oil consumption problem you SHOULD (double-check elapsed time---36mo) have enough time for you to find out for sure and get the car re-ringed on chevy $$. I did...had no issues afterward.

Good luck.

My Z-06 is an early delivery, August 2000. It now has 21,000 miles. It has never burned ANY oil. I suspect that is the case with the vast majority of 2001 Z-06's.

Drive like a fool=high oil consumption
