I was at the Corvette clubs final cruise this past Weds. It was the first time with my '02 Z06. I had the hood open and a fellow Z06 owner looked at my engine and said to me " that is not stock, what is it?"
Pointing to an aluminum tube and an attached piece to the tube. I said I thought it was part of the AC. I have since looked at other Z06 engine shots and can not find the piece. Can someone tell me what the tube is? Is it a stock piece on an '02? I circled it in red. Note the inserted or welded piece going into the tube. I was not sure if he was saying the whole tube was not stock or just that piece.
It is part of the AC system - I don't have manual upstairs right now to tell you exactly what it is called or what it does...but I checked pictures of my Z and a friends 01 Z and they both have it identical to yours.
If noone else posts what it is (exactly) then I will when I get back from the funfest tomorrow.
I apologize, but I'm just too lazy right now - read my other recent post regarding my activities tonight...
If I was to guess, I think it is the high pressure cutoff switch for the A/C. This switch, at a certain pressure and above, will disengage the clutch on the A/C compressor to avoid the A/C system from overpressure which would cause damage to the compressor, lines, etc.
I noted you still have the factory AC Delco Battery. If you do a search, there have been problems w/many of them leaking, due to various reasons. Because the computer is underneath this area, it causes LOTS of headaches. Alot of folks, (myself included), replace the factory battery w/an Optima Redtop. It is a seal-celled battery, preventing gassing and leaking.
I hate to use this damn expression, but, it is cheap insurance.
It's the A/C high pressure switch. Controls the A/C condensor fan. Some models have them on the back of the compressor. My 04 coupe has it in the same spot. Guess the other guys car is wrong.
