I am looking for opinions and prices on any of the built in radar detectors. I am not sure how many there are but I think K40 makes one. I know they may not be the best but if they are very good I may give it a shot as I leave the top off a lot and leaving a $400 V1 in plain sight is too nerve racking
I bought my C5 about a month and a half ago. It had a K40 built in unit in the car when I got it. The ***** and lights were mounted in the ashtray, the noisemaker was mounted in the A/C vent cavity and was visible when the door was open. The forward receiver/antenna was mounted in the drivers side grill next to the fog light. My impression? Don't waste your money on a K40. The antenna looked like hell since it was visable; the sound it made to warn you sounds like chirping birds (quite annoying) for the first 10 seconds or so, then made a chirping sound. I never had it out on the highway, so I can't comment on performance there. In the city mode, I had a visual on the LEO before it went off, so it really wasn't much help. You will notice I said "had" at the beginning of this post, I had it taken out today. I see a V1 in my future very soon. If you leave your car open, put it in the glove box and lock it.
Motor trend did a report a year or so ago and it was the worst performing and most expensive unit they tested.
The general concensis is that built-in detectors are not quit as good as windshield mounted detectors becuase you usually have to mount them so low on your car they're blocked by all the traffic in front of you.
Just get a V1 or 8500 X50 and mount it as high as possible and just to the right of your rear view mirror and no one will ever know

Can't comment on the K40 but do agree with everything else. I know one person with a built in Passport and his only negative comment is that he wished it had greater range...due to the position of the receiver.

I just installed a V1. My mount came from Great Lakes Trophy, and mounts directly to the bottom of the mirror. I hard wired the detector directly into the fuse box under the passenger side kick panel using the 8' cord provided with the V1. I know there have been a number of posts on this subject, and the V1 is top of the line (no flames please from the Escort 8500 - X50 owners).
The detector slips on and off literally from the mount and the line cord on the V1 is a simple RJ-11 cord just like you use on your analog telephone.
It's very clean and neat, thanks to my friend AZC5!
