It's actually not that far off....Obviously most depends on the driver. I have seen post here of some guys goind under 12 seconds in stock Z06's, and if that is the case that should be pretty darn closr to a stock Viper. I am basing this on the the GTS and Rt...not the SRT, only because I really don't know what the stock SRT does.
I was beating up on a stock '02 gts w/ my bolt-on Z06 at the drags.... I was running 12.3's in the mid-summer on street tires. He got so mad when I told him I was taping it all! Then he lost it during one race when I was beating him again and slamme the wall, made me sick =(
Last friday there were Z verse Viper drags at Calif Speedway but no one has posted any results, I'm sure these guys could tell you first hand what went on.
Yea Ive thought about this many times as well.....
The average guy in a stock 02 and up Z06 can pull a 12.4-12.6...
Sure some do better (and some much better) but thats pretty much the average.
The average guy in a 02 viper wll run a 12.2-12.4 ( very similar times).
Ive seen it quoted in books that the viper srt can run a 11.8 ( motor trend) so I would assume the average driver could pull a 12.0-12.2.
So as you can see the Z06 and viper are both in the low to mid 12 second range....
This is totaly a drivers race. It's not like cmparig a Z06 to a vette, where the vette runs a 13.2 and the Z06 is 8 tenths quicker at a 12.4 and should kil the vette even if he has a bad run and runs 13.0.
This is a Z06 to a viper where theres only a 2-4 tenth differance (depending on year of viper) where a slight mis step for the viper and a god run for the vette could result in an good win for the Z06.
Man... it's times like this that I wish my wife could drive a stick so I could of got a Z06... Oh wll the LS6 head/cam will be in soon.
Seriously though.. Were sittin here talking about how a 50,000 Z06 is a match for an 80,000 dollar viper. Sure th viper has the advantage but Im sure that 1 out of every 4 races wil go for the Z06....How many cars under 120,000$ can say tat they could beat a viper one out of every 3 or 4 runs stock?
I have a friend that has a 1999 and 2003 Viper. I have a 03 Z06. No matter which car I drive, I win! I an 60 years old and he is 62. We both have previous road racing experience. The cars are very, very close in straight line performance.
Just from my one experince, 96 0r 97 Gts ...sounded stock...from behind 2 nd to third,,,about the same( it felt like I had the upper hand).. 3 rd side by side ..he pulled from me about 8 cars lenths..4 th for me ,it was the same 8 cars. needed a longer track
I never had the chance at a ZO6, Some day...
my car is all stock 91 375 Hp car..
I would like to hear more on stock cars to see how we held up.
A base model Viper against a Z06 is closer than it should be for the massive difference is both HP and Base Price. The Viper does have a small edge.
However, just as the Z06 is a high-performance model of Corvette, there is a high-performance model Viper (RTS or SRT or something like that). That model has a big advantage over a Z06.
To me, the Viper looks awesome and is a fierce performance car. However, depreciation rates, fuel economy, and Drive-out costs are advantages that, to me, keep my Z06 the twinkle in my eyes and the magic in my dreams.
In the end, there can be only one... and the one is Corvette Z06. The legend lives.
