Default Keyed!

Hey Guys,

Just bought my car a week ago tonight. While I was doing some minor detailing, I noticed two key marks, on on the hood and one on the front fender. I don't have any idea of where they came from. One got through the clear coat but the other didn't. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've read about some of the scratch-covering polish or wax. I'm so angry right now. You work hard for something and you finally get it to enjoy for yourself, then people take it upon themselves to try and ruin it because of jealousy.

Sorry to hear your pain as a victim of vandalism. I suggest you try a professional body shop to repair the scratches - they can make the scratches disappear.

Best of luck.

I haven't had a yet to try this yet but I posted a thread about finding out that the front end of my car was scratched and someone else recommended this web site to me.

If you do happen to try any of their products let me...or once I put my car away for the winter I figure thats when I'll get around to taking care of things like that and thats when I'll let you know.

Default Thanks for the Support

I couldn't go to bed with the scratches on my mind. I went out, washed the front and waxed the areas THOROUGHLY. I got 2/3 of one scratch to disappear and the other is about half-way gone. Do I just need to come to the conclusion that my car will always draw attention (both good and bad) and face up to the fact that there's always a higher than normal chance that my car will be vandalized? Geez, maybe I should just start saving up for a new paint job now.

I panic when I get a normal towel scratch or blemish, chips. It's part of driving them. They really seem to stick out on these cars...you can accept that stuff, but vandelism is

That sucks big time. Try that L stuff that they talk about in the car care part of the forum. You could try repairing it yourself, but this might be the time for professional help. Insurance might be of assistance since it doen't go on your record. Vandalism is less than comp usually as far as deductible goes. Good luck.

What color is your car?
If it is black you can fix it easily.

Clean the scratch
Get a tiny bottle of touch up paint
Apply it pretty thick
Let it dry overnight
Wet sand it with 1200-1500 grit paper until it is perfectly smooth (this part is a bit scary since your clearcoat will scratch and turn white from all the scratching)
Buff
It will be gone

I have a Grand National with new paint and I've done it many times, black is easy to repair because its so easy to match.
The first time I got a little scratch in it I took it back to the body shop and this was the method they used on small scratches. He said he could charge me $400 to fix it or I could do it myself.

Thanks, good tip. I'm picking up a black 99 coupe Sat. Getting keyed has become a worry for me. Some people are just envious.

tbgunn,

I haven't read your color in the posts. If it is not Mill Yell or Mag Red, you might have a chance of repairing it yourself.

Two weeks after I bought my 2000 Mag Red coupe last year, someone keyed the passengers door. It went through the clear and into the second coat. (three coat system). A paint expert in my neighborhood tried sanding and buffing. The scratch came out, but the color started to shift as he got closer to the base coat.

The bottom line, Allstate paid $701 to repaint the door for a 10" gouge!! I feel for you and know what you are going through.
