Default Clutch: What needs replacing?

Ok my clutch has become very worn, it's got very little play, it's starting to really act up, not slipping (yet) so is it my clutch disc assembly that needs replacing? or what parts would be causing this?

so i'm looking at about $230 in parts (from gmpartsdirect.com) and then a sh*t load in labor.

Should I even bother bringing it to the dealership for this? I'm just wondering because I'm going to have the Ext. Warrenty after my Org. Warrenty goes out.

Thanks.

I came up with around $385.00 delivered in parts. Don't know what to tell you about the dealer.

This is good to know. No problems with my clutch right now, but someday it will need to be replaced. Wonder what the labor charge would be for the swap?

I'm guessing this is around a 4-5 hour job. In Fairfax, VA, the labor rate is $89 an hour--equates to $356-$445 in labor.

That sound about right???

On a previous front wheel drive turdmobile of mine I never changed the flywheel, just the clutch, disc and throwout bearing. Is it normal to change the flywheel when you change the clutch?

If your going with a Z06 clutch check out FredBeans price lists.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ght=Fred+Beans

They are a supporting forum member and great to work with...very reasonable prices.

It cost me $500 to get my clutch replaced at local LS1 tuner. I had one guy who posts here (in Chicago area but shall remain nameless) and said he does corvette service work quote me like $900....so shop around because some people smoke crack before qouting prices I think.

be careful with cheap labor rates...remember, you get what you pay for

$700 for quality work far outweighs the lesser price of a job not well done.

Some of you guys are in way over your head... first of all you need to replace the flywheel.. you need a balanced kit.. you need a zo6 slave and zo6 master.. the whole back end of the car has to come apart.. the complete rear and transmission.. and the whole rear suspention.. the exhaust sytem .. its about a 6 hour job buy someone who does them.. a 25 dollar an hour mechanic wont know squat about a C5... just one example o a night mare.. Car up on the lift.. mechanic drops the rear end.. the car tips forward and falls off the lift.. you just removed 1/3 of the weight of the car.. if you dont replace the master and slave with Z06 parts your asking for trouble.. and you need to get a balanced flywheel and clutch, pressure plate and pilot. your talking 500 labor and 600 in parts.. 400 for the balanced flywheel clutch kit and 100 each for the master and slave... try putting in an unblanced clutch assmbly with out a new flywheel..

Evil-Twin ... i thought because my car was a 2003 i didn't need the z06 slave and master? is this false? because I've heard it from more than one person.

I dont do any kind of racing, was told the z06 can handle more abuse.

Sorry but I just had it done and total parts was $385.00. Got everything but a new master because it wasn't needed.

Neablas what did partsdirect charge you on shipping? I have never used them but I saw a few posts where guys were saying they roast you on shipping charges.

From FAQ at www.gmpartsdirect.com

"Why does shipping and handling fee seem so high?

Gmpartsdirect.com sells parts near published dealer cost plus a percentage for a shipping and handling fee. This fee is not actual shipping charges only.

The shipping and handling pays for the shipping charges plus our other expenses like web programming, employees, etc. Another way to explain this is, we are selling you the part near published dealer cost, the shipping, and handling pays all of our expenses associated with running the web site. The amount left over after our expense is our profit.

Keep in mind our overall price is a tremendous savings over retail price and in most cases is even cheaper than dealer wholesale shipped to your door step, and without leaving the convenience of the Mouse. Compare the overall price delivered to your door."
