Default new z vs. an suv...

kid you not, i could barely pull on a mercedes ml 55 suv this eve from [somewhere between the highway speed limit and certain gear limitations], after downshifting from 5th to 4th and flooring it. i got a couple of car lengths, but it sure wasn't much, and i backed off at around [certain gear limitations], after which he instantly caught me.

that sure is one damn fast suv in a straight line! maybe there was more under that hood than met the eye? although, in a 45-50 mph left hand sweeper, i took it up to [certain gear limitations] and positively roasted him, 15-20 car lengths easily.

what could be under that hood? aren't they v8's? there was another emblem on there besides factory stuff, but couldn't recognize it. impressive nonetheless.

i instantly thought of callilng a&a for a supercharger kit this weekend... i need to convincingly pull away from a friggin suv!

i guess there's always something faster...or real close!

You probably should have downshifted to third. Third can take you up to 100 MPH.

Don't worry :
"POWER IS NOTHING WITHOUT CONTROL"
if the turn was a little sharper he'd be in the bushes, plus he was in an automatic I'll bet. And as we all have learned correct gear seletion is key on the highway. I practice 3rd thru 5th alot it seems to be a little harder for me than just taking off, I just have to spend a little more time with the Hurst.

Don't sweat it, you still wipped his butt

If it is like the E55 it is supercharged and close to 500 HP. The non SC'd 55's in the clk's are close to 400hp, 379 I think. Nice cars, I want an E55 for my dd so bad.

Dude if you were anything below 80 you need to dump it in 3rd, blip the gas to match the reves, and go!

Mercedes builds'm right.... The new CL55 has 645 HP and 745 FT/LBS. It seems that 600HP is the benchmark in Europe.

And everybody keeps waiting for the 500HP C6 Z06. I hope its enough by the time it gets here??

I aggree, but a weight reduction with 500 HP might just do it.

unfortunately, i was past that while cruising in 5th. otherwise, yep 3rd pulls real good indeed! i'm not comfortable yet with how fast i can be going in 5th and then drop to third (matching revs, of course) allowing me a good 1500-2000rpm of room to run those ponies to redlilne. i seriously run out of room on the local roads. what's the collective wisdom here? what's the fastest i can be going before having room to drop into 3rd to make it worthwhile?

that was one super fast suv, that's for sure. probably cost at least twice what the z was, no doubt. i'll take z plus the xtra change, thank you.

The ML55 is an AMG car - I believe the same motor that is in the E55, which is a beast!

Oh - and I am sure the two are similar weights...heavy, but fast

Car goes just over 100 in third gear... so I'd say 85ish is a good threshold for 3rd of 4th.

I just can't see racing an SUV in a Corvette ZO6! Runs should be picked & chosen. Why run anyone w/ a car that starts & wants to race you?
By the way, I have my car for 15 months & have not had a "real" race outside of the track yet! I don't look for it, but when it finds me I'm ready. It would be over in 2nd gear I'd expect anyway.

it wasn't a "race," really. what i didn't describe was that the car came screaming up behind me doing mach 5 as i was just minding my own business, lumbering along @ about 45 or so mph on the road before i got to the freeway on-ramp (this was around midnight, on my way home from work). i seriously thought he was going to ram right into me. his obnoxious bright blueish headlights were glaring everywhere. then he tailgated me for about 5-10 seconds, and decided to blow past me and near cut me off as we approached the on-ramp.

i took offense, of course....and proceeded to jump all over that and show him my tail lights! no way he could hold it on the on-ramp as i blew by, a 1/4 mile long right-then-left sweeper with a posted limit of 45 or so.

Welcome to the wonderful world of high horsepower, where even a lead sled can be engineered to accelerate and move faster than a speeding bullet.

So, if you want to really traumatize the rice-burners wih the fart-can mufflers, that Mercedes SUV you saw, loaded with six to eight adults, could be exactly what the shrinks would prescribe.

More Money = More Cubic Inches = More HP and Torque = More performance = more humiliation for those performance car owners suffering the sin of "Pride".

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. This is most easily seen when the RBFCM (Rice-Burner with Fart Can Muffler) trash talks the suv you saw. Thien, in a display of raw power, makes a big spray only to find that the big cubes took big bites out of the contest.

Worst of all, when it happens, the whole community becomes like a hostile mob, taunting the poor loser with names and lables like "Loser" and many that are much worse. Yep, cars like the one you ran with, they are the things that traumatize people...

Imagine, you give your best nos shot to you car, look up, and see this very clunky suv loaded with seven adults and gear, You freeze, becomming dear in the headlights, paralyzed by the thought that this big clunker ran down your pride and joy, making you look like a total loser.

AVOID THIS FATE...
Respect all vehicles on the road. Chances are the ego you save will be yours.

BEWARE the GRAND Prix. They always call the ball. Unfortunately, they don't have a chance. They look stupid. Stupid people band to gether to form a riotl

If you are on the lot when the riot starts, your car is toat... not a good idea.

your firend
dave
