I have been reading a lot about the LS1 having pinging occurring even with high octane gasoline. I currently have been running Chevron 93 in the car, but have bad pinging. There is no pinging at Idle in park or neutral. Wondered if any of you have had similar problem and how to fix/troubleshoot. Need help pretty bad.
FWIW...I've been running Chevron Premium 93 for years and have no pinging. This is my daily driver and I've got over 111K miles on this car and it's running fine.
I would assume you've got other issues or your gas might be lame.
Have you ever played with the timing of your motor? Also, try going to different gas stations and using their fuel. I know that when it comes down to it the fuel all comes from the same place but it might make a difference.

I have had no problem with Chevron gas at all and I use 92 or 94 octane.
Have been buying from the same chevron station all the time?, if so try another chevron station. That one station maybe be selling lower grade gas and a higher grade.
Pinging will only occur under load, not in Park or at idle. You didn't say if the car has been modded or is stock. Several people have encountered pinging problems after installing some of the air intake systems since they lean out the air/fuel mixture to the point where the onboard computer cannot compensate. If you car is stock and hasn't been reprogrammed, then it may be the gas. Just my $.02.

You have a 98 C5. chances are you have carbon build up which will increase your compression ratio and causing you premature ignition.. carbon build up on spark plugs will do this also,,

On hard acceleration, mine pings as well. It's is an '02 and is absolutely stock (exhaust plate and Optima Red Top notwithstanding...)Kinda makes me hesitate to go WOT for all the racket it causes.
In Washington we have 92 Octane from Chevron and I add a bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner every 2000-3000 miles.
How certain are you gentlemen about having it "de-carbonized" solving this problem? And how does one accomplish that?

No modifications to the car. It is a 97 with only 34k on it. I put AC Delco Iridium plugs in it two months ago and have driven 3k on them. I have used BP, Chevron, and Texaco Premium fuels. One month ago, I decarbonized the Engine using GM top end cleaner, and it didn't help anything but the piston slap for about 800 miles (before it returned).
I was thinking about trying some of the NGK TR55's, and new plug wires. Also, I have been thinking about getting a catch can to help out. By the way, how could one actually change the timing? I want to say that the car is running on the lean side. How might a person get the computer to add more fuel to the mix?
