To change the tension springs, do I take out the tension control screws? That deosn't sound right...don't they attatch to soemthing, or do they just compress down in the holes?
Place a towel or rag around the base of the shifter before unscrewing the setscrews to prevent them from falling in the tranny tunnel if you drop them. Then unscrew the setscrews being mindful that they are compressing a couple of springs underneath each of them. They will want to catapult into the air due to the compressed spring force. They are not attached to anything - they simply sit in the hole and are compressed by the setscrews.
Patches is right. I did offer to help, since I live close, but it seems like you have it all in order. You'll enjoy all your new toys. I'm on my way to LAPD and spend some $$$$$$$. Then 2morro I'm off to West Coast to spend some more $$$$$$.
Then it's garage time for me. Good luck wtih your installs.
Okay, I love my hurst and yes, the 2nd to 3rd is automatic but I would still like less stiffness in the side to side. If I loosen these set screws does this lessen the stiffness. I still don't quite understand how the set screws work. Do I still have to remove some springs or is the set screws that adjust the tension?
Thanks guys...just finished the install and it's great (see post below)...found out about the springs poppping the bolts out, almost lost one in the tranny (oooh, that would have been bad). I used the soft springs all around and it works great.
Thanks for the offer, CN Red...I'll definitely call you on future mods!

Jim - The answer to your question is it depends. For the front to back motion, you only have the stops with set screws, no springs. Since the C5 has built in stops in the tranny, the shift stops at the top and bottom of the Hurst shifter are not needed. Most people remove them since they seem to be the source of some of the rattles people report.
The two allen head screws on the top of the shifter base control the side to side stiffness of the shifter and the springs reside underneath. The factory sets up the shifter with two springs (inner and outer) on each side. Too stiff for my taste. You can loosen up the shifter a bit by backing out the allen screws but you need to be careful not to back out too far. My advise is to take the springs out and replace with a single spring on each side. Use the lightest spring in your kit. Make sure you use some Loctite thread locker (blue) on the allen screws when you put them back in. Good Luck.
Thanks for the scoop. I already rid the hurst of the bump stops as I heard they were built in and the hurst ones would back out at inopportune times. I will try the stop screw thing and see if it makes me happier. I know the instructions mentioned different spring but I had no idea what they were talking about. Thanks again,
