Been having fun cruising around in the Z, just had a question about turning the car off
well first off, the car starts up fine, idles fine, runs great (very strong), but when I shutdown it sounds like rattling under the hood for a sec, then goes away? is this normal?
Imagine putting a screw or small piece of metal in a blender... think of that, sort of what it sounds like
You sure the sound is coming from under the hood ? The normal sounds on shut off are the Column Lock and the Tranny if you do not have the tranny in reverse with clutch depressed while shutting down (stated in owners manual). I always make sure its in reverse as I am turning off the ignition. I dont get any other sounds otherwise.
Ah, I have been putting the car in neutral, let the clutch out fully, then shut down?
Could this be the problem?
Probably. The tranny will make a rattling sound similar to what you describe if in neutral during engine shut-off and is normal. Since it is supposed to be in reverse (recommended) when parked, I follow the recommendation and no longer hear the sound.
You are hearing the drivetrain. When you turn off the car, keep the clutch held and then turn off the car, the sound will go away. It is clutch/throwout bearing related.
