As far as I know all the C5's have it. It's behind the centre dash panel if my memory serves me right. I am sure others will chime in with the correct answer.

On the vette I think it is behind the radio. I think it has been in the C5 right from the start. Before you try to disconnect the black box you can't it is part of the airbag system.
This has been discussed numerous times, try a search to find more threads about the black box
GM have been using this black box widely for some time although I don't believe it's in my 1998 Z28 and believe it is in the 99's. The idea was to use such information to analyse accidents but I understand that there is a case ongoing where the Police have extracted the incriminating evidence (and it is very incriminating) and the argument continues about the legal use of such information.
Well, as Zilla suggested I did a search and found lots of info on the blackbox. It looks like GM has been installing them since 1994. They were first installed in Camaros in 1996 and have been in Corvettes since 1997.
It appears that most of the boxes record the last 5 seconds of data before an air bag deployment or in some cases a "near" air bag deployment. After an air bag deployment the crash data is permanently recorded on a e-prom inside the blackbox.
Not only do the courts use the info against you, your insurance company will use it against you too. It shows all the things they would want to know including your speed and if you were wearing your seat belt (could they try to deny medical someday for not wearing your seatbelt?). If the insurance company gets ahold of your car you can bet they will read it. Most insurance companies have the software and all they have to do is plug the box into their laptop.
In the C5 the box is located...
"Behind accessory trim plate, under heater and AC control".
Here is a pic of it in a 2001 Cadillac...

I knew it was in mine and have heard that police/insurance companies have used the data in accident cases. I would imagine that more and more data will be gathered on furture cars.
My understanding that at least legally, they must have a court order to have it read (although if the insurance company has access to it for any repairs, I wouldn't be suprised if they read it illegally, then forced the issue to have it read under the guise of "suspicion").

You're correct. Anytime that we have a prosecutable fatal accident we always check for a black box. If one is present, a search warrant is executed and the box is removed and examined for the critical evidence. Yes, it does provide some incredible information.
